Effective fractonic behavior in a two-dimensional exactly solvable spin liquid

Guilherme Delfino et al.

Summary: In this work, we propose an exactly solvable ZN clock model on the lattice and find exotic properties for the low-energy physics, resembling fractonic physics from higher dimensional models, such as UV/IR mixing and excitations with restricted mobility. We study the continuum descriptions for the lattice system in two regimes and identify two distinct field theories for each. A characteristic time scale separates these regimes, with the system described by an effective fractonic Chern-Simons-like action below the scale and a pure mutual Chern-Simons action above the scale.

Theory of oblique topological insulators

Benjamin Moy et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new type of three-dimensional fractional topological insulator, called oblique topological insulator (TI). This phase is characterized by the condensation of dyons-bound states of electric charges and monopoles, and exhibits topological order, emergent one-form symmetries, and boundary states that are not realizable in two dimensions. Based on lattice gauge theory, the researchers present a continuum topological quantum field theory to describe oblique TI phases, and demonstrate that this theory captures the generalized global symmetries and topological orders observed in lattice gauge theory.

Emergent higher-symmetry protected topological orders in the confined phase of U(1) gauge theory

Salvatore D. Pace et al.

Summary: This study investigates a compact U-kappa(1) gauge theory in 3 + 1 dimensions with a general 2π-quantized topological term and a symmetric matrix K. It shows that at energies below the gauge charges' gaps but above the monopoles' gaps, the theory exhibits a compact Z(k1)((1)) x Z(k2)((1)) x ... 1 symmetry.

Higher central charges and topological boundaries in 2+1-dimensional TQFTs

Justin Kaidi et al.

Summary: This paper examines conditions in topological quantum field theory (TQFT) related to the existence of topological boundary conditions. The study identifies necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a topological boundary in the case of bosonic, Abelian TQFTs and explores the conditions for non-Abelian TQFTs. The paper also discusses a curious duality in the partition functions of Abelian TQFTs.

Position-dependent excitations and UV/IR mixing in the ZN rank-2 toric code and its low-energy effective field theory

Salvatore D. Pace et al.

Summary: We investigate how symmetry and topological order are coupled in the (2 + 1)-dimensional Z(N) rank-2 toric code. The particles in the system show position-dependent excitations and different properties on different lattice sites, with a nontrivial realization of square-lattice translation symmetry. Despite the complexity of the system with multiple anyon types and permutations, a Chern-Simons theory with six U(1) gauge fields is used to describe all of them.

Effective field theory of dipolar braiding statistics in two dimensions

Yun-Tak Oh et al.

Summary: In this study, a rank-2 toric code Hamiltonian is constructed and it is found that the quasiparticles in this model exhibit unusual braiding statistics, capturing the total dipole moment of the particles involved in the braiding. An emergent vector potential is introduced to interpret this dipolar braiding statistics.

Global dipole symmetry, compact Lifshitz theory, tensor gauge theory, and fractons

Pranay Gorantla et al.

Summary: This study investigates field theories with global dipole symmetries and gauge dipole symmetries. By placing these theories on a lattice and taking the continuum limit, various subtleties in the precise meaning of these symmetries are resolved. The study reveals that different continuum limits lead to different theories with different properties, symmetries, etc. Additionally, the study discovers that certain physical observables are highly dependent on the number of lattice sites, and introduces the concept of timelike global symmetries to explain the mobility restrictions of defects.

(3+1)d boundaries with gravitational anomaly of (4+1)d invertible topological order for branch-independent bosonic systems

Zheyan Wan et al.

Summary: This article studies bosonic systems on a space-time lattice and introduces the concept of branch-independent bosonic (BIB) systems. It is found that invertible topological orders in branch-independent systems differ from those in generic lattice bosonic systems. The branch dependence on a lattice is related to the orthonormal frame of smooth manifolds and the framing anomaly of continuum field theories.

Rank-2 toric code in two dimensions

Yun-Tak Oh et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigate a two-dimensional spin model obtained by Higgsing a rank-2 U(1) lattice gauge theory. The resulting spin model is a stabilizer code and can be exactly solved. We identify two types of dipole excitations and analyze the braiding phase between monopoles and dipoles.

Fracton phases via exotic higher-form symmetry-breaking

Marvin Qi et al.

Summary: This study investigates p-string condensation mechanisms for fracton phases from the perspective of higher-form symmetry, focusing on the X-cube model and the rank-two symmetric-tensor U(1) scalar charge theory. By discussing higher-form symmetry in lattice models in terms of cellular homology, unique 1-form symmetries specific to the X-cube model and the scalar charge theory are identified. These symmetries differ from standard 1-form symmetries typically found in relativistic quantum field theory, offering insights into interpreting p-string condensation and related symmetry gauging constructions through the lens of higher-form symmetry.

Exotic symmetries, duality, and fractons in 2

Nathan Seiberg et al.

Summary: The passage discusses nonstandard continuum quantum field theories in 2+1 dimensions, highlighting their exotic global symmetries, charged excitations, and dualities resembling systems in 1+1 dimensions. These continuum models serve as low-energy limits of known lattice systems, with discontinuous field configurations playing a crucial role. Additionally, the authors plan to present 3+1-dimensional versions of these systems in two companion papers, focusing on continuum quantum field theories of some fracton models.

Low-energy limit of some exotic lattice theories and UV/IR mixing

Pranay Gorantla et al.

Specifically, in some cases, the infinite volume limit and the continuum limit do not commute, indicating a surprising UV/IR mixing.

Physics of symmetry protected topological phases involving higher symmetries and its applications

Chao-Ming Jian et al.

Summary: This study explores the physical constructions and boundary properties of various symmetry-protected topological phases involving 1-form symmetries, from one spatial dimension to four spatial dimensions. It also examines anomalies of 3d states of matter and discusses the connection between SPT states with 1-form symmetries and condensed-matter systems in lower dimensions. Additionally, the potential trivial gapped phases of quantum dimer models are explored based on the nature of their corresponding bulk states in higher dimensions.
