Summary: The article explores the history of economic consultants hired by the petroleum industry to estimate the costs of climate policies, revealing how they inflated costs and ignored policy benefits. Their biased economic analyses played a key role in undermining major climate policy initiatives in the US over several decades. Suicide and self-harm

Summary: Suicide and self-harm are major health and societal issues worldwide, with a higher burden observed in low-income and middle-income countries. The causes of these behaviors are multifactorial, influenced by factors such as gender, age, ethnicity, and geography. Clinical and public health interventions offer promise, but their effectiveness has mostly been studied in high-income countries. Predicting suicide is unlikely to be helpful, and intervention and prevention efforts should involve both clinical and community approaches, involving every healthcare professional.

Summary: Health, harms and disease are influenced by social, political and physical factors. However, the current popular understanding of health is still focused on a biological model that overlooks the conceptualization of health, harm, disease, causation and risk, as well as the distribution of health and relevant regulations, norms, values and rights. By challenging our thinking about health, harms and disease, we can better understand how health can be threatened and find opportunities to promote and protect health.

Global economic uncertainty and suicide: Worldwide evidence

Summary: This paper evaluates the impact of economic uncertainty on suicide rates worldwide. The results suggest that increased economic uncertainty, as well as unemployment and economic growth, may lead to a higher risk of suicide. The greatest impact of economic uncertainty is found in Africa and the Middle East. The study highlights the usefulness of uncertainty indicators for detecting periods of increased suicide risk and designing prevention strategies.

Industry strategies to market opioids to children and women in the USA: a content analysis of internal industry documents from 1999 to 2017 released in State of Oklahoma v. Purdue Pharma, LP et al

Summary: This study aims to identify the advertising strategies used by opioid manufacturers to market to women and children. The findings suggest that manufacturers encouraged children to use opioids by recruiting coaches and school nurses, suggested that adolescents seek pain management medications through unbranded initiatives, and claimed that opioid use could reduce health risks associated with untreated pain in women. This kind of marketing should be scrutinized further to protect vulnerable groups.

The cost-effectiveness of banning highly hazardous pesticides to prevent suicides due to pesticide self-ingestion across 14 countries: an economic modelling study

Summary: The study evaluated the cost-effectiveness of implementing national bans of highly hazardous pesticides to reduce the burden of pesticide suicides. The findings suggest that banning highly hazardous pesticides could result in fewer suicide deaths at a relatively low cost, especially in countries with a high proportion of suicides due to pesticide self-poisoning.
