Origin of superconductivity in hole doped SrBiO3 bismuth oxide perovskite from parameter-free first-principles simulations

Julien Varignon

Summary: The recent discovery of nickel oxide superconductors highlights the importance of first-principles simulations in understanding the formation of bound electrons in superconductivity. However, density functional theory (DFT) cannot properly account for the strong electronic correlation effects in oxides, disqualifying this technique. Sr1-xKxBiO3 superconductors, being isostructural to nickel oxides, provide an ideal platform for studying complex superconductors and the underlying pairing mechanism. This study shows that parameter-free DFT simulations can accurately capture the experimental features and quantities of Sr1-xKxBiO3 superconductors, including the prediction of a phase transition and the electron-phonon coupling constant in agreement with experiments.

The magnetic structure of DyFeO3 revisited: Fe spin reorientation and Dy incommensurate magnetic order

Clemens Ritter et al.

Summary: We used high resolution and high intensity neutron powder diffraction to study the magnetic order and spin reorientation transition in orthoferrite DyFeO3. We found that at low temperatures, the Fe-sublattice shows a Gamma(1) type order while the Dy-sublattice exhibits an incommensurate magnetic structure. This is an important finding in DyFeO3, which has been overlooked in recent discussions on its multiferroic properties.

Geometric effects in the infinite-layer nickelates

F. Bernardini et al.

Summary: Geometric effects associated with the relative size of the R-site atom in infinite-layer nickelates RNiO2 are investigated via first-principles calculations. The study reveals that the size of the R-site atom plays a crucial role in determining the electronic structure and structural transformation in the materials.

Dynamical structural instability and its implications for the physical properties of infinite-layer nickelates

Chengliang Xia et al.

Summary: In this study, first-principles calculations are used to investigate the structure-property relationship in infinite-layer nickelates. The results show that the stability of the crystal structure is related to the choice of lanthanide element. The I4/mcm structure is found to have several advantages compared to the P4/mmm structure, including a reduced Ni dx2???y2 bandwidth, smaller Ni d occupancy, and a cleaner Fermi surface. These findings are important for understanding the properties of nickelates and Mott physics.

Nickelate Superconductivity without Rare-Earth Magnetism: (La,Sr)NiO2

Motoki Osada et al.

Summary: Through material optimization, a significant portion of the La1-xSrxNiO2 phase diagram can enter the realm of superconductivity, with a maximum onset temperature of approximately 9 K at x = 0.20. An unexpected indication of a superconducting ground state was also observed in undoped LaNiO2. Combining the results of different rare-earth elements in the NiO2 system reveals a generalized superconducting dome characterized by systematic shifts in unit cell volume and electron-hole populations across the lanthanides.

First-principles study of electron and hole doping effects in perovskite nickelates

Lucia Iglesias et al.

Summary: Rare-earth nickelates exhibit a metal-insulator transition in their bulk phase, and this transition can be tuned by the rare-earth radius. Hole and electron doping in the prototypical nickelate SmNiO3 have been studied using first-principles calculations, showing the formation of polarons and intermediate states leading to semiconductor behavior at low doping levels, and transition to metallic behavior at higher doping levels. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of DFT simulations in studying doping effects in correlated oxides and exploring the superconducting phase of rare-earth nickelates.
