Iron-Facilitated Organic Radical Formation from Secondary Organic Aerosols in Surrogate Lung Fluid

Jinlai Wei et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the deposition of fine particles and iron in the respiratory system can generate organic radicals in surrogate lungfluid (SLF). Iron ions significantly enhance the yield of organic radicals by facilitating the decomposition of organic peroxides. Ascorbate mediates the redox cycling of iron ions to sustain the decomposition of organic peroxides. In addition, antioxidants are efficient at scavenging hydroxyl radicals and superoxide.

The permeability of human red blood cell membranes to hydrogen peroxide is independent of aquaporins

Florencia Orrico et al.

Summary: Hydrogen peroxide plays an important role in vascular biology, but its permeation mechanism in human red blood cells is not well understood. This study found that hydrogen peroxide does not enter red blood cells through aquaporins, but rather through the lipid fraction or an unidentified membrane protein.

Quantitative detection of hydrogen peroxide in rain, air, exhaled breath, and biological fluids by NMR spectroscopy

Tayeb Kakeshpour et al.

Summary: Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) plays a key role in environmental chemistry, biology, and medicine. Quantitative detection of H2O2 is challenging due to its low concentration compared to water. This study demonstrates that optimized NMR spectroscopy allows direct, interference-free measurements of submicromolar levels of H2O2 in various fluids. The study also confirms the spontaneous generation of H2O2 in microdroplets formed on a hydrophobic surface, which can interfere with atmospheric H2O2 measurements. The antimicrobial activity and seasonal variation of H2O2 may be linked to respiratory viral diseases.

Inter-comparison of oxidative potential metrics for airborne particles identifies differences between acellular chemical assays

Pourya Shahpoury et al.

Summary: Oxidative potential (OP) is an important factor in the health effects of airborne particulate matter (PM). This study compared 11 OP indicators using standard reference material of urban PM. The indicators showed first-order kinetics at low PM concentration, but non-linear kinetics at higher concentrations. They demonstrated linear dose-response relationships at certain PM concentrations, but varied in their sensitivities to PM.

Superoxide Release by Macrophages through NADPH Oxidase Activation Dominating Chemistry by Isoprene Secondary Organic Aerosols and Quinones to Cause Oxidative Damage on Membranes

Ting Fang et al.

Summary: Secondary organic aerosols (SOA) can activate oxidases in macrophages to release superoxide, leading to oxidative stress. Among them, phenanthrenequinone (PQN) is more toxic. These findings provide a basis for further understanding of the adverse health effects and oxidative stress caused by fine particulate matter.

Superoxide Formation from Aqueous Reactions of Biogenic Secondary Organic Aerosols

Jinlai Wei et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the dominant formation of superoxide (O2•−) in the aqueous reactions of biogenic SOA generated by photooxidation, with a molar yield of 0.01-0.03%. Kinetic modeling reveals the relationship between the relative yields of various types of ROS and the abundance of organic hydroperoxides and alcohols in SOA.

Effects of albumin, transferrin and humic-like substances on iron-mediated OH radical formation in human lung fluids

David H. Gonzalez et al.

Summary: In this study, the impact of iron active proteins in lung fluid and humic-like substances on the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was investigated. It was found that albumin enhances (OH)-O-center dot generation from inorganic Fe(II), while transferrin attenuates this enhancement. The study suggests that fulvic acid, a surrogate for HULIS, is capable of mobilizing Fe(II) away from albumin and transferrin, increasing the formation rate of O-2(center dot-) and ultimately of (OH)-O-center dot.

Formation of Gas-Phase Hydrogen Peroxide via Multiphase Ozonolysis of Unsaturated Lipids

Zilin Zhou et al.

Summary: Gas-phase H2O2 is a significant oxidant in the atmosphere that can lead to lung tissue damage and forest decline. A study found that unsaturated lipids commonly found in human skin oil and atmospheric aerosol can undergo surface ozonolysis to produce H2O2, with key intermediate products being alpha-hydroxyhydroperoxides (alpha-HHPs). The research suggests that alpha-HHPs act as stable reservoirs of H2O2 under dry conditions, releasing the oxidant in the presence of water vapor.

Hallmarks of environmental insults

Annette Peters et al.

Summary: Environmental insults such as contaminated air, water, and food expose human beings to a plethora of chemicals and stressors, impacting health at all stages of life. The proposed eight hallmarks of environmental insults encompass oxidative stress, genomic alterations, epigenetic changes, and disruptions to various bodily functions, offering insight into the severe health effects induced by complex mixtures of environmental exposures.
