Association between Dietary Inflammatory Index and Sarcopenia: A Meta-Analysis

Houze Diao et al.

Summary: The association between the dietary inflammatory index (DII) and sarcopenia is unclear. A meta-analysis of available studies revealed that a high DII increases the risk of sarcopenia. However, due to limitations in this study, more research is needed to confirm this relationship.

Association between Dietary Inflammatory Index and Sarcopenia in Crohn's Disease Patients

Dongsheng Bian et al.

Summary: This study examined the association between Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) and sarcopenia in Crohn's disease (CD) patients. The results showed that a higher DII score significantly increased the risk of sarcopenia, while a lower DII score was associated with higher appendicular skeletal muscle mass.

Summary: This study found that the consumption of pro-inflammatory diets was associated with loss of muscle strength and physical function, as well as an increased risk of fractures in older Chinese men. Pro-inflammatory diets had no significant association with muscle-related outcomes but increased the long-term risk of osteoporosis in older Chinese women.

Dietary Inflammatory Potential Is Associated With Sarcopenia Among Chronic Kidney Disease Population

Ying Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between dietary inflammatory potential and sarcopenia in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The results showed that dietary inflammatory potential is independently related to sarcopenia in CKD patients. Anti-inflammatory diet patterns may be a protective intervention for CKD-associated sarcopenia.

Summary: This study investigated the association between the dietary inflammatory index (DII) and components of sarcopenia. It found that higher DII scores were associated with lower muscle mass and strength, as well as an increased likelihood of having both low muscle mass and low muscle strength in older adults.

Dietary Inflammatory Index and Cross-Sectional Associations with Inflammation, Muscle Mass and Function in Healthy Old Adults

Summary: The study found that a pro-inflammatory diet reflected by the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) is associated with higher systemic inflammation, slower gait speed, and lower muscle mass in old adults. Intervention studies are needed to examine whether anti-inflammatory dietary approaches can help to improve muscle mass and function and thus minimize the risk for sarcopenia in the long-term.

Sarcopenia - Molecular mechanisms and open questions

Petra Wiedmer et al.

Summary: Sarcopenia is a muscle-wasting syndrome characterized by progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass, quality, and strength during normal aging. Patients with sarcopenia mainly suffer from loss of muscle strength, leading to mobility disorders, increased risk of morbidity, and mortality. Various molecular mechanisms, including hormone function, muscle fiber composition, and inflammatory pathways, have been identified as causes of sarcopenia.

Lifelong Aerobic Exercise Alleviates Sarcopenia by Activating Autophagy and Inhibiting Protein Degradation via the AMPK/PGC-1α Signaling Pathway

Jiling Liang et al.

Summary: It has been shown that lifelong regular aerobic exercise can prevent and delay age-related muscle atrophy by activating the AMPK/PGC-1 alpha signaling pathway to suppress impairment of the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS), excessive apoptosis, defective autophagy, and mitochondrial dysfunction, thereby optimizing quality control of skeletal muscle.

Association Between Dietary Inflammatory Index and Mental Health: A Systematic Review and Dose-Response Meta-Analysis

Guo-Qiang Chen et al.

Summary: The meta-analysis showed a strong association between a higher Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) score and various mental health outcomes, such as symptoms of depression, anxiety, distress, and schizophrenia. Furthermore, there was a linear dose-response relationship between DII and symptoms of depression. This suggests that a pro-inflammatory diet may be a risk factor for mental disorders, highlighting the importance of novel nutritional psychiatry approaches for promoting good mental health.
