Few-Femtosecond Dynamics of Free-Free Opacity in Optically Heated Metals

A. Niedermayr et al.

Summary: The interaction of light with an excited free-electron gas is a fundamental process in physics and has applications across various fields. In this study, the researchers experimentally investigated the free-free opacity in aluminum on a few-femtosecond timescale. They found that a simple independent-particle model with a fixed band structure was sufficient to explain the experimental findings, without the need to consider changes in screening or electron scattering. These findings provide a benchmark for further investigations and modeling of dense nonequilibrium plasma under extreme conditions.

Unravelling the intertwined atomic and bulk nature of localised excitons by attosecond spectroscopy

Matteo Lucchini et al.

Summary: This study investigates the sub-femtosecond dynamics of core excitons in MgF2 single crystals using attosecond transient reflection spectroscopy, revealing the dual atomic-solid nature of excitons. The findings expand our understanding of exciton dynamics and provide a new approach to controlling exciton dynamics in the nanometer and petahertz frequency ranges.

First-principles calculations for attosecond electron dynamics in solids

Shunsuke A. Sato

Summary: This article reviews the recent development of first-principles calculations for light-induced electron dynamics in solids and highlights its ability to accurately describe the optical properties of solids and provide physics insights. Furthermore, the analysis method can extract microscopic information from simulation results, opening up a new path for analyzing nonequilibrium electron dynamics in matter.

Attosecond x-ray transient absorption spectroscopy in graphene

Giovanni Cistaro et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the real-time tracking of coherent electron dynamics induced by ultrashort light pulses in condensed-matter systems using attosecond transient absorption in graphene. It also introduces a simple semiclassical theory correlating energy structure and Berry phase with changes in absorption spectrum, opening a path for novel imaging techniques in condensed matter systems at the attosecond timescale.
