Evidence of linear and cubic Rashba effect in non-magnetic heterostructure

Sanchari Bhattacharya et al.

Summary: In this article, we systematically study two types of defect-free (0 0 1) interfaces, termed as Type-I and Type-II, to investigate the electronic properties resulting from spin-orbit coupling (SOC). The Type-I heterostructure produces a 2D electron gas, while the Type-II heterostructure hosts an oxygen-rich 2D hole gas at the interface. We also find evidence of both cubic and linear Rashba interactions in the conduction bands of the Type-I heterostructure, while the Type-II interface exhibits spin-splitting of both valence and conduction bands, which are only of linear Rashba type. Furthermore, the Type-II interface has a potential photocurrent transition path, making it an excellent platform for studying the circularly polarized photogalvanic effect.

Kondo screening cloud in a superconductor with mixed s-wave and p-wave pairing states

Zhen-Zhen Huang et al.

Summary: We study the Kondo screening of a spin-1/2 magnetic impurity coupled to a superconductor with the aids of Rashba spin-orbit coupling and a Zeeman field. Our results show that stronger Rashba spin-orbit coupling facilitates the formation of Kondo singlet, while the Zeeman field decreases the binding energy. The spin-spin correlation decays fast and exhibits high anisotropy due to the Rashba spin-orbit coupling.

Semiclassical spin transport in LaO/STO system in the presence of multiple Rashba spin-orbit couplings

Anirban Kundu et al.

Summary: The interaction between linear and cubic spin-orbit couplings in the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 (LaO/STO) system provides new possibilities for spin transport applications. By studying the interplay between linear and cubic Rashba spin orbit coupling (RSOC) on in-plane magnetic moments, it is found that the presence of multiple types of RSOC with distinct angular dependencies breaks the symmetry of the Fermi surface and ensures a finite spin accumulation.

Rashba-like physics in condensed matter

Gustav Bihlmayer et al.

Summary: Spin-orbit coupling in materials that lack inversion symmetry induces a unique form of Zeeman interaction in momentum space, resulting in interconnection between the electron's spin and momentum. This Review highlights recent progress in the development of condensed matter research that exploits the unique properties of spin-orbit coupling in non-centrosymmetric heterostructures, with a focus on new classes of materials and non-equilibrium transport effects.

Orientation-dependent Rashba spin-orbit coupling of two-dimensional hole gases in semiconductor quantum wells: Linear or cubic

Jia-Xin Xiong et al.

Summary: Rashba spin-orbit coupling in two-dimensional hole gases exhibits orientation-dependent variations, allowing control over the appearance of k-linear or purely k-cubic Rashba SOC by adjusting the growth orientation. The influence of local interface and global symmetry on Rashba SOC formation, as well as the role of HH-LH mixing, is discovered in this study.

Kondo Cloud in a Superconductor

Catalin Pascu Moca et al.

Summary: Magnetic impurities in a metal are screened by the Kondo effect, while in a superconductor they lead to quantum phase transition and subgap states. The Kondo cloud is present in both quantum phases, but complete in the screened phase and only partial in the unscreened phase. The compensation value, related to g factor of impurities, can be monitored experimentally by bias spectroscopy.

Magnetic impurity in hybrid and type-II nodal line semimetals*

Xiao-Rong Yang et al.

Summary: The study using the variational method looked into the Kondo screening of a spin-1/2 magnetic impurity in both hybrid and type-II nodal line semimetals, finding that the bound state between the impurity and conduction electrons is more easily formed when the density of states is large. The unique dispersion relation and spin-orbit couplings in nodal line semimetals result in interesting features in the spatial spin-spin correlation components, with decay behaviors that can serve as fingerprints to distinguish between hybrid and type-II nodal line semimetals.

Classical and cubic Rashba effect in the presence of in-plane 4f magnetism at the iridium silicide surface of the antiferromagnet GdIr2Si2

S. Schulz et al.

Summary: This study presents a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the two-dimensional electron states at the iridium-silicide surface of the antiferromagnet GdIr2Si2, revealing significant spin-orbit splitting in the paramagnetic phase. Below the Ned temperature, the ARPES measurements show a complex magnetic domain structure, which can be clarified by comparing the data with DFT modeling.
