Transcriptional control of energy metabolism by nuclear receptors

Charlotte Scholtes et al.

Summary: Nuclear receptors are transcription factors that regulate metabolic genes by transducing hormonal, nutrient, metabolite, and redox signals. They play a central role in the transcriptional control of energy metabolism and maintain cellular energy homeostasis by adapting gene expression to changing energetic demands. Nuclear receptors must cooperate with other factors, integrate signals from key metabolic pathways, and synchronize their activities with the biological clock to orchestrate a large ensemble of input signals.

Using MetaboAnalyst 5.0 for LC-HRMS spectra processing, multi-omics integration and covariate adjustment of global metabolomics data

Zhiqiang Pang et al.

Summary: Liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) is widely used in global metabolomics studies, but there are still challenges in data processing, statistical analysis, and functional interpretation. To overcome these barriers, the MetaboAnalyst platform has been updated to provide step-by-step instructions.

The major urinary protein gene cluster knockout mouse as a novel model for translational metabolism research

Sarah Greve et al.

Summary: Scientific evidence suggests that major urinary proteins play a crucial role in murine scent communication and metabolism, particularly with higher expression in males. The study of major urinary protein knockout mice found metabolic differences primarily in male mice, including lipid accumulation and activation of lipogenesis. These findings suggest that the major urinary protein knockout mouse could serve as a potential alternative model for translational metabolism research.

Brown adipose tissue is associated with cardiometabolic health

Tobias Becher et al.

Summary: A retrospective analysis of over 50,000 patients' F-18-FDG PET/CT scans revealed that individuals with brown adipose tissue had lower odds of cardiometabolic conditions. The presence of brown adipose tissue was independently correlated with lower odds of type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease, congestive heart failure, and hypertension. The beneficial effects of brown adipose tissue were more pronounced in individuals with overweight or obesity, suggesting a potential role in mitigating the deleterious effects of obesity.

The cellular and functional complexity of thermogenic fat

Paul Cohen et al.

Summary: Brown and beige adipocytes are mitochondria-enriched cells that can dissipate energy in the form of heat, regulating whole-body energy metabolism. They have diverse functions beyond thermogenesis, acting as metabolite sinks, secretory cells, and regulators of adipose tissue homeostasis, ultimately contributing to improved metabolic health.

Brown adipose tissue monocytes support tissue expansion

Alexandre Gallerand et al.

Summary: The study revealed a large diversity in monocyte and macrophage populations in brown adipose tissue, with monocytes playing a crucial role in tissue expansion and requiring constant replenishment. This highlights the importance of monocyte recruitment for tissue remodeling and expansion in BAT.
