Large eddy simulation of ship airflow control with steady Coanda effect

Kewei Xu et al.

Summary: This paper numerically studies the steady Coanda effect on a ship model, and explores the effects of different jet locations on drag reduction and vortex structures. The results show that the roof-jet has a stronger Coanda effect and achieves better mitigation of flow re-circulation compared to the side-jets.

Drag mitigation by steady blowing and Coanda effect on a square back Ahmed body

Baptiste Plumejeau et al.

Summary: The impact of converging steady blowing on the global drag past a square back Ahmed bluff body is investigated experimentally. The dynamics of the recirculation bubble are studied for a width to height aspect ratio, w/h of 1.346, with a ground clearance of g/w = 0.154, and for a nominal Reynolds number of Reh = 2.86 x 105. It is found that inward steady blowing can reshape the recirculation bubbles and significantly affect the pressure drag, while the boat-tailing effect shortens the recirculation length but tends to increase drag.

Role of phase-difference between two adjacent rectangular synthetic jet actuators in active control of flow over a rounded ramp

Ehsan Asgari et al.

Summary: In this study, the role of phase-difference between adjacent synthetic jet actuators (SJAs) in flow control over a rounded ramp geometry has been investigated. The research shows that phase-difference has an impact on the separation and reattachment locations, and increasing the momentum ratio reduces the effectiveness of the phase-difference.

Effects of Coanda jet direction on the aerodynamics and flow physics of the swept circulation control wing

Shuai Shao et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effects of the Coanda jet direction on the aerodynamics and flow physics of swept wings. It reveals that the Coanda jet perpendicular to the trailing edge has a more significant impact on the aerodynamic loads and flow structures, while the Coanda jet in the freestream direction performs better in improving the lift-to-drag ratio.

Summary: This article introduces the application of a Coanda-effect based jet thruster in underwater robots. By theoretical analysis and fluid simulations, the critical geometric parameters of the thruster are optimized. The dynamic control of the robot is achieved through Line-of-Sight navigation and PID controller. Experimental results demonstrate that the thruster can provide good maneuverability for the robot in multiple degrees of freedom.

Aerodynamic shape optimization of co-flow jet airfoil using a multi-island genetic algorithm

Hao Jiang et al.

Summary: Co-flow jet technology has the potential to improve the aerodynamic efficiency of aircrafts. This study integrates co-flow jet technology into aerodynamic shape optimization and demonstrates improved performance. The optimized aerodynamic shape shows increased energy efficiency ratio of lift augmentation and drag reduction, with a larger curvature near the leading edge and accelerated flow in the middle of the airfoil, enhancing the co-flow jet circulation.

Mechanism of hysteresis and uncontrolled deflection in jet vectoring control based on Coanda effect

Nan-Xing Shi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanism of hysteresis and uncontrolled deflection in jet vectoring control based on the Coanda effect. A new passive fluidic thrust vectoring control model was designed, and a synchronous pressure, force, and flow field measurement system was developed to analyze the characteristics of key flow structures and their effects on wall pressure distribution and vectoring force. The study reveals that the formation/breakdown of the separation bubble changes the flow state of the backflow, leading to uncontrolled deflection. The hysteresis phenomenon occurs due to the formation and breakdown of the separation bubble at different valve positions.

Computational evaluation of geometric effects on aerodynamic performance of circulation control airfoils

Yu-Wei Chu et al.

Summary: The geometric effects of Coanda trailing edges on the aerodynamic performance of an airfoil were evaluated numerically, showing that a circular trailing edge CC airfoil has better control effectiveness at low subsonic speeds and an elliptic trailing edge CC airfoil outperforms the circular one at high subsonic flow conditions. The elliptic trailing edge CC airfoil demonstrates delayed stall occurrence, better control consistency, and stability compared to the circular one.

Axisymmetric jet manipulation using multiple unsteady minijets

Arun Kumar Perumal et al.

Summary: This study experimentally manipulates a turbulent round jet with Reynolds number of 8000, investigating the effect of five control parameters on the decay rate of the jet-centerline mean velocity. Different flow structures for various minijet configurations are proposed, and three distinct mechanisms of highly effective manipulation are identified. The optimal parameters for maximum decay rate occurrence do not vary with the minijet number, but the penetration depth of the minijet does.
