Raman scattering of a laser beam carrying an orbital angular momentum

R. Nuter et al.

Summary: This study theoretically and numerically examines the Raman backscattering process of a laser beam with orbital angular momentum. The results show that the presence of orbital angular momentum in the laser beam mitigates the Raman backscattering and that the scattered electromagnetic wave has an azimuthal order equal to the laser beam's.

Increased Ion Temperature and Neutron Yield Observed in Magnetized Indirectly Driven D2-Filled Capsule Implosions on the National Ignition Facility

J. D. Moody et al.

Summary: The application of an external 26 Tesla axial magnetic field to a D-2 gas-filled capsule on the National Ignition Facility leads to a significant increase in ion temperature and neutron yield, approaching the conditions required for fusion ignition. The improvements are determined through energy spectral measurements and neutron reaction estimations, and are consistent with radiation magnetohydrodynamic simulations.

Kinetic phenomena of helical plasma waves with orbital angular momentum

D. R. Blackman et al.

Summary: An accurate description of plasma waves is essential for understanding various plasma phenomena. This study focuses on the Laguerre-Gaussian mode, a type of plasma wave that can possess quantized orbital angular momentum. Three-dimensional simulations demonstrate the existence of stable plasma waves with orbital angular momentum, which generate large static magnetic fields with unique twisted structures. The Landau damping of twisted plasma waves exhibits important differences from standard longitudinal plasma wave damping, including an increased damping rate influenced by focal width and orbital number. The momentum direction acquired by resonant particles from twisted plasma waves can be significantly altered, while the radial electric field has subtle effects on the trajectories of resonant electrons.

Two plasmon decay instability stimulated by large-incidence-angle laser in inertial confinement fusion

C-W Lian et al.

Summary: The two-plasmon-decay instability (TPD) in the large-incidence-angle regime is studied using fluid and particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. It is found that the TPD threshold can be significantly lower within a narrow incidence angle range close to 60 degrees compared to the normal-incidence threshold. A threshold formula is proposed and verified through simulations. The simulations show significant laser absorption and energetic electron generation once TPD is excited. The incident angle and laser spot size have a significant influence on TPD in the large-incidence-angle regime, posing preheating risks to inertial confinement fusion.

Momentum, angular momentum, and spin of waves in an isotropic collisionless plasma

Konstantin Y. Bliokh et al.

Summary: This study examines the momentum and angular momentum properties of linear waves in an isotropic nonrelativistic collisionless electron plasma, specifically focusing on Langmuir and electromagnetic waves. The research distinguishes between two types of momentum and angular momentum densities, and investigates the canonical momentum and spin densities of Langmuir waves and electromagnetic waves in different forms involving electric and magnetic fields. The findings also explore the implications of canonical momentum and spin densities in transport and electrodynamic phenomena.

Kilo-Tesla axial magnetic field generation with high intensity spin and orbital angular momentum beams

Andrew Longman et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the generation of axial magnetic fields in plasma induced by absorption of angular momentum from high intensity laser pulses. The study compares the effects of ultrahigh intensity circularly polarized Gaussian beams and linearly polarized orbital angular momentum beams. The results show that the magnetic field strength is independent of plasma density but strongly dependent on the laser beam waist.
