Understanding PFOS Adsorption on a Pt Electrode for Electrochemical Sensing Applications

Pratahdeep Gogoi et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the electrochemical detection of PFOS using differential pulse voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Three distinct regions of adsorption behaviors were observed on a bare platinum electrode with respect to PFOS concentration, and the adsorption isotherm constant for PFOS on a Pt electrode was calculated to be 1.6x10(12) cm(3) mol(-1) from fitting the electrochemical data with a modified Langmuir isotherm model.

Field Evaluation of the Sentinel™ Integrative Passive Sampler for the Measurement of Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in Water Using a Modified Organosilica Adsorbent

Paul L. Edmiston et al.

Summary: In this study, a passive sampler specifically designed for measuring PFAS in water was tested in four study areas. The results showed correlations between passive sampler and grab sample measurements of PFAS concentrations across a wide concentration range. The average relative difference between the two methods was 18%. The precision of passive sampling varied depending on water flows, and standardized protocols and calculation methods were developed to facilitate future use of passive sampling for PFAS.

A juxtaposed review on adsorptive removal of PFAS by metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with carbon-based materials, ion exchange resins, and polymer adsorbents

Elika Karbassiyazdi et al.

Summary: The removal of PFAS from water is a global concern due to their negative impacts on the environment and public health. Various adsorbents have been used, including carbon-based materials, ion exchange resins, biomaterials, polymers, and MOFs. MOFs, as a new generation of adsorbents, offer unique properties such as increased surface area, tunability, and improved selectivity.

Sampling of freely dissolved per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in surface water and groundwater using a newly developed passive sampler

Eliza M. Kaltenberg et al.

Summary: Passive sampling methods, such as the newly developed PFAS INSIGHT sampler, offer advantages in obtaining time-integrated results and separating contaminant fractions for a better understanding of associated risks. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of the PFAS INSIGHT sampler in sampling ionic and non-ionic PFAS from water, with detection limits comparable to conventional water sample analysis. Laboratory characterization and field deployments show good agreement between passive sampler data and direct water sample measurements for PFAS concentrations.

Summary: This study tested commercial activated carbon, carbon black, and zirconium-based metal-organic framework as adsorbents for perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS). The results showed that carbon black was the most effective adsorbent due to its large mesopores and hydrophobic nature.

Field Validation of a Novel Passive Sampler for Dissolved PFAS in Surface Waters

Christine Gardiner et al.

Summary: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have become a growing global concern due to their widespread presence, bioaccumulation, and adverse effects. In this study, a novel integrative passive sampler, a microporous polyethylene tube, was tested and sampling rates (R-s) for nine PFAS in surface waters were derived. The results demonstrated the potential use of passive samplers as measurement and assessment tools for PFAS in dynamic aquatic environments.

Calibration of organic-diffusive gradients in thin films (o-DGT) passive samplers for perfluorinated alkyl acids in water

Po Wang et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the use of o-DGT for monitoring PFAS in water, finding that in-situ sampling rates can be predicted using measured diffusion coefficients. The configurations of o-DGT tested provide a cost-effective monitoring tool for measuring perfluorinated alkyl acids in aquatic systems, particularly for four PFAS with reasonable correlations.

PFAS treatment with granular activated carbon and ion exchange resin: Comparing chain length, empty bed contact time, and cost

Conner C. Murray et al.

Summary: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are highly persistent chemicals with significant global environmental challenges. A study comparing the removal performance of granular activated carbon (GAC) and ion exchange resin (IX) for PFASs found that the length of PFAS chains and functional groups determine the mass transfer zone (MTZ) height and optimal empty bed contact times (EBCTs). Cost sensitivity analysis showed that IX was the most cost-effective adsorbent for removing both long and short chain PFASs compared to GAC.
