Enhancing the fungicidal activity of amphotericin B via vacuole disruption by benzyl isothiocyanate, a cruciferous plant constituent

N. Yamada et al.

Summary: BITC enhances the fungicidal effects of AmB in yeast by amplifying vacuolar membrane disruption. This combinatorial antifungal effect may lead to dose reduction of AmB in clinical therapy and decrease side effects in patients, making it a potentially valuable strategy for combating fungal infections.

Study on the Inhibitory Activity and Possible Mechanism of Myriocin on Clinically Relevant Drug-Resistant Candida albicans and Its Biofilms

Xin Yang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that myriocin has significant antifungal activity against Candida albicans, possibly through damaging the cell wall and membrane. Furthermore, myriocin effectively inhibits and eliminates biofilms, with mechanisms related to the inhibition of extracellular polysaccharides and cell surface hydrophobicity.

In Vitro Characterization of Twenty-One Antifungal Combinations against Echinocandin-Resistant and -Susceptible Candida glabrata

Hazim O. Khalifa et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the interaction of 21 antifungal combinations with C. glabrata isolates, finding that most caspofungin combinations with azoles or amphotericin B showed synergistic interactions, while azole and 5-flucytosine combinations with azoles or amphotericin B did not. None of the combinations showed antagonistic interactions, with most of the detected synergistic actions occurring among echinocandin-resistant isolates.

Techniques for the Assessment of In Vitro and In Vivo Antifungal Combinations

Anne-Laure Bidaud et al.

Summary: Systemic fungal infections have high mortality rates despite adequate treatment, and acquired resistance to antifungals is increasing. Using antifungal combinations is one strategy to overcome resistance, with the checkerboard method being the most widely used technique for assessing drug interactions. Evaluating the efficacy of antifungal combinations in vivo using animal models is crucial, with new alternative models in invertebrates showing promise.

Honokiol and Magnolol: Insights into Their Antidermatophytic Effects

Adriana Trifan et al.

Summary: This study found that honokiol and magnolol have high activity against dermatophyte infections, acting as fungicidal agents through inhibition of ergosterol biosynthesis. Synergistic effects were observed when magnolol was combined with terbinafine, while honokiol only showed additive effects. Additionally, magnolol displayed inhibitory effects on pro-inflammatory cytokines released by stimulated human neutrophils.
