Convulsions in children with COVID-19 during the Omicron wave

Jonas F. Ludvigsson

Summary: This paper describes unexpected cases of children experiencing convulsions during the Omicron variant outbreak in Sweden. The younger children had fever symptoms, while the older child exhibited upper respiratory symptoms. The conclusion suggests that convulsions may be a sign of Omicron variant infection in children with COVID-19.

SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant replication in human bronchus and lung ex vivo

Kenrie P. Y. Hui et al.

Summary: SARS-CoV-2 variants pose a threat to global public health. The Omicron variant replicates faster in bronchi but less efficiently in the lung parenchyma compared to other variants. All variants of concern have similar cellular tropism.

Risk Factors for Severe COVID-19 in Children

Rebecca C. Woodruff et al.

Summary: This study describes population-based rates and risk factors for pediatric severe COVID-19. The study found that children under the age of 2 with chronic lung disease, neurologic disorders, cardiovascular disease, prematurity, and airway abnormality, as well as children aged 2 to 17 depending on a feeding tube, with diabetes mellitus, and with obesity, are more susceptible to severe COVID-19. The results of this study are important for identifying high-risk children and implementing prevention efforts, including vaccination.

Paediatric hospitalisations due to COVID-19 during the first SARS-CoV-2 omicron (B.1.1.529) variant wave in South Africa: a multicentre observational study

Jeane Cloete et al.

Summary: South Africa has experienced a significant increase in COVID-19 cases, especially among pediatric patients, with the predominant variant being the SARS-CoV-2 omicron strain. The rise in pediatric COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations has occurred ahead of adult hospitalizations, highlighting the need for ongoing monitoring to understand the long-term effects of the omicron variant on children and adolescents.

Coronavirus Disease 2019 Disease Severity in Children Infected With the Omicron Variant

Adeel A. Butt et al.

Summary: According to data from the National COVID-19 Database in Qatar, Omicron variant infection causes milder disease in children/adolescents compared to Delta variant infection, as reflected by lower hospitalization rates and the need for intensive care unit (ICU) care or mechanical ventilation. Children aged 6 to <18 also have less severe disease compared to those younger than 6 years old.

A. M. Price et al.

Summary: In this study evaluating BNT162b2, vaccine effectiveness against hospitalization for Covid-19 in the delta-predominant period among adolescents 12 to 18 years of age was more than 90%; during the omicron period, vaccine effectiveness was 40% against hospitalization and 79% against critical illness. Vaccine effectiveness against hospitalization was 68% among children 5 to 11 years of age.

SARS-CoV-2-Na?ve Korean Children and Adolescents Hospitalized With COVID-19 in 2021

Youn Young Choi et al.

Summary: While the risk of severe outcomes with SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant remains low in most SARS-CoV-2-naive children and adolescents, it may affect the severity of COVID-19 in those with high-risk underlying medical conditions. High-risk children and adolescents, particularly those with obesity, may experience severe COVID-19, highlighting the importance of considering vaccination for high-risk children.
