Spin Seebeck Effect: Sensitive Probe for Elementary Excitation, Spin Correlation, Transport, Magnetic Order, and Domains in Solids

Takashi Kikkawa et al.

Summary: The spin Seebeck effect (SSE) is a phenomenon where a spin current is generated in a magnetic material due to a temperature gradient, which can be detected electrically. Intensive studies have been conducted to understand the origin of SSE since its discovery in 2008. SSEs appear in various magnetic materials and reflect fundamental properties of magnets. This article reviews recent progress on SSE in different systems and emphasizes its emerging role as a probe of magnetic properties in solids. The recently discovered nuclear SSE is also briefly discussed.

Thermally driven magnon valve with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy

G. L. S. Vilela et al.

Summary: The active manipulation of quasiparticles, other than electrons, is a feasible alternative for developing the next generation of devices for information processing. Exploring magnons is advantageous as they can travel far and fast due to their low dissipation and high group velocity, transferring spin without charge transport, thus reducing the Joule heating. We demonstrate the proof of principle for three states' memories via transport studies of thermally excited magnon currents at room temperature in ferrimagnetic insulating magnon valves TmIG/Au/TmIG with PMA.

Composition-tunable magnon-polaron anomalies in spin Seebeck effects in epitaxial BixY3-xFe5O12 films

Takashi Kikkawa et al.

Summary: By investigating the magnon-polaron excitation in Bi(x)Y(3-x)IG films in spin Seebeck effects, we observed sharp peak structures and anomalies in the longitudinal SSE voltages. Increasing the Bi content resulted in a shift of the peak fields towards lower magnetic field values.

Temperature dependence of the mean magnon collision time in a spin Seebeck device

Vittorio Basso et al.

Summary: In this study, the mean collision time for magnon scattering zc(T) is calculated based on the relaxation time approximation using the experimental spin Seebeck coefficient of a bulk YIG/Pt bilayer. The results reveal that scattering consists of two processes: a low temperature process with a T-1/2 dependence attributed to defect scattering, and a high temperature process with a T-4 dependence associated with magnon-magnon scattering. These findings are then used to predict the thickness dependence of the spin Seebeck coefficient for thin films.

Role of Ferromagnetic Monolayer WSe2 Flakes in the Pt/Y3Fe5O12 Bilayer Structure in the Longitudinal Spin Seebeck Effect

Won-Yong Lee et al.

Summary: The introduction of a monolayer tungsten diselenide (ML WSe2) interlayer in the Pt/YIG bilayer system increases the longitudinal SSE (LSSE) voltage significantly by enhancing spin accumulation in the Pt layer. The spin fluctuation in ML WSe2 amplifies spin current transmission, leading to a substantial improvement in thermopower. Additionally, the induced ferromagnetic properties of the ML WSe2 flakes boost the LSSE voltage.

Temperature dependence of the picosecond spin Seebeck effect

Farhan Nur Kholid et al.

Summary: In the YIG|Pt system, we observed an increase in the spin Seebeck effect as temperature decreased, contrary to the behavior observed in electrical measurements. By analyzing the different contributions, we isolated the temperature dependence of the spin-mixing conductance and observed features correlated with the magnon spectrum bands in YIG.

Room-Temperature Ferromagnetism of Single-Layer MoS2 Induced by Antiferromagnetic Proximity of Yttrium Iron Garnet

Shiao-Po Tsai et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates room temperature ferromagnetism in MoS2 induced by YIG's MPE and antiferromagnetic coupling at the interface. The spin-polarized valleys of MoS2 can sustain ferromagnetism even at room temperature. The magnetic circular dichroism reveals the extent of antiferromagnetic coupling between the magnetic moments of MoS2 and YIG.
