Air pollution and IgE sensitization in 4 European birth cohorts-the MeDALL project

Erik Melen et al.

Summary: The study found that air pollution exposure was not consistently associated with IgE sensitization to common allergen extracts in children up to age 16, but may be related to sensitization to specific allergen molecules such as birch, grass pollen, and cat allergens.

Worldwide trends in the burden of asthma symptoms in school-aged children: Global Asthma Network Phase I cross-sectional study

M. Innes Asher et al.

Summary: The study showed that the prevalence and severity of asthma symptoms varied by age group, country income, region, and centre over the past three decades. The high worldwide burden of severe asthma symptoms could be mitigated by enabling access to effective asthma therapies.

Interactive effects of allergens and air pollution on respiratory health: A systematic review

Holly C. Y. Lam et al.

Summary: Studies have shown a negative impact of outdoor allergens on respiratory symptoms, but it is unclear whether this effect is independent of outdoor air pollutants. Out of 35 studies reviewed, 12 reported significant statistical interactions between allergens and air pollutants, but there is no consensus on which allergen or air pollutant is more likely to interact.

Neighbourhood green and blue spaces and allergic sensitization in children: A longitudinal study based on repeated measures from the Generation XXI cohort

Ines Paciencia et al.

Summary: Limited and inconsistent evidence on the effect of natural environments on atopy in children disregards time-varying and cumulative exposures. A longitudinal study of 730 children in Portugal found that residing in neighborhoods with more vegetation at 10 years and lifetime exposure to higher levels of NDVI were associated with a lower risk of allergic sensitization. These findings support the role of longitudinal exposure to green spaces, particularly in late childhood, in preventing allergic sensitization in children.
