Cu-doped Ni-LDH with abundant oxygen vacancies for enhanced methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate degradation via peroxymonosulfate activation: key role of superoxide radicals

Jingyi Zhu et al.

Summary: Cu doping introduces oxygen vacancies (OVs) into Ni-based layered double hydroxides (LDHs), enhancing their catalytic performance for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation and methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate (MeP) degradation. Superoxide radicals and singlet oxygen were found to dominate the oxidation processes, and the presence of OVs affected the PMS activation. The study suggests a new way to enhance the catalytic performance of LDH catalysts by introducing OVs through metal doping in PMS-based systems.

Review of soil heavy metal pollution in China: Spatial distribution, primary sources, and remediation alternatives

Yufeng Wu et al.

Summary: With the development of economy, soil heavy metal pollution has become more severe, leading to degradation of soil resources and deterioration of ecosystems. This study focuses on the analysis of heavy metal pollution in Guangxi, Fujian, Liaoning, and Yunnan provinces in China. The results show that heavy metal concentrations increase from north to south, with the highest pollution in Northeast China and excessive levels in Central, Southwest, and South China. Mineral exploitation and industrial production are the primary causes in severely polluted provinces, while sewage irrigation and irrational fertilizer use contribute to pollution in agricultural areas. Urban development, transportation, and household refuse are also potential driving factors. Remediation methods involving physical-chemical, chemical-biological, and physical-biological technologies are widely applied, with a focus on combining phytoremediation and microbial remediation techniques for their environmental friendliness. Overall, this study provides valuable information on spatial distribution, sources, and remediation alternatives for soil heavy metal pollution, contributing to the protection of soil resources and land utilization.

Mechanistic insight into the reaction pathway of peroxomonosulfate-initiated decomplexation of EDTA-NiII under alkaline conditions: Formation of high-valent Ni intermediate

Sheng Liang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the reaction mechanism of peroxomonosulfate (PMS) with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)-NiII under alkaline conditions through experimental tests and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Experimental evidence shows that PMS can successfully decomplex EDTA-NiII and form Ni hydroxide precipitates at alkaline pH, leading to a significant reduction in aqueous Ni concentration. The proposed alternative reaction pathway suggests that NiII is attacked by PMS to produce high-valent Ni species, which further self-decomplex to NiIII hydroxides, indicating the involvement of NiIV species as a viable redox pathway promoting decomplexation.

Understanding spatial effects of tetrahedral and octahedral cobalt cations on peroxymonosulfate activation for efficient pollution degradation

Zhe Xu et al.

Summary: Identifying the spatial effects of cobalt cations in cobalt-based heterogeneous catalysts is essential for developing effective peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activators in water treatment. The study found that octahedral cobalt species exhibit superior intrinsic activities compared to tetrahedral ones, and interface kinetics characterized by systemic electrochemical techniques determine the intrinsic activity of the catalyst. Additionally, the flat band potentials of cobalt-based oxides reflecting Fermi level positions play a role in activating PMS.

Summary: A new mesoporous Ag/ZnO@NiFe2O4 nanorod was prepared using a facile, low-cost, and environmentally friendly strategy as an effective catalyst and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) photo-activator for ACT degradation. The catalyst showed high catalytic activity and efficient degradation of ACT due to the formation of a hetero-junction structure with NiFe2O4 and ZnO, as well as the presence of Fe3+/Fe2+ and Ni2+/Ni3+ reaction cycles enhancing the PMS activation rate. The study also proposed a plausible mechanism for the photocatalytic degradation of ACT based on LC-MS analysis of the reaction intermediates.

Summary: This study elucidated the crucial role of ferrate self-decomposition in oxidation reactions and developed a mechanistic kinetics model to understand the involvement of Fe(V), Fe(VI), and Fe(IV) species in the oxidation of PMSO. Results showed that the Fe(V) species derived from ferrate self-decomposition contributed significantly to PMSO oxidation, while the oxidation pathways of Fe(VI) and Fe(V) were influenced by different factors.
