Real-world natural passivation phenomena can limit microplastic generation in water

Yunhong Shi et al.

Summary: The study found that microplastic release levels from plastics exposed to tap water and synthetic drinking water were similar, indicating that synthetic drinking water can be a suitable reference standard for testing microplastic release levels from plastic products. Polypropylene products exposed to boiling tap water developed a protective copper oxide film, leading to a significant reduction in microplastic release.

Microbe-Based Sensor for Long-Term Detection of Urine Glucose

Dunzhu Li et al.

Summary: The development of a reusable and low-cost urine glucose sensor using microbial fuel cells as a selective glucose sensor is feasible and beneficial for diabetes screening and control. The sensor has a quick response time and a large detection range, and it can last for over 5 months. Its selectivity can be improved by adjusting the concentration of organic matter. The sensor's results are comparable to those of a commercial glucose meter, and it provides a novel and reliable approach for continuous monitoring of urine glucose.

Alcohol Pretreatment to Eliminate the Interference of Micro Additive Particles in the Identification of Microplastics Using Raman Spectroscopy

Dunzhu Li et al.

Summary: Raman spectroscopy may not effectively distinguish microplastics from micro additive particles, but a new protocol can eliminate this interference. Testing on three typical plastic products showed that they can release microplastic-like additive particles and microplastics, potentially increasing health risks.

Stainless steel cloth modified by carbon nanoparticles of Chinese ink as scalable and high-performance anode in microbial fuel cell

Haoliang Wu et al.

Summary: A novel anode based on a stainless steel cloth modified with carbon nanoparticles significantly improved the performance of microbial fuel cells, including shortened start-up time, increased maximum current, and higher power density. The addition of carbon nanoparticles and their excellent dispersibility played a crucial role in enhancing electron transfer between the electrode and bacteria.

Improvement of air cathode performance in microbial fuel cells by using catalysts made by binding metal-organic framework and activated carbon through ultrasonication and solution precipitation

Bonyoung Koo et al.

Summary: Activated carbon is an inexpensive catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction in microbial fuel cells, but its electrochemical catalytic activity is poor. This study combined ZIF-67 with activated carbon to improve its performance, resulting in higher power density compared to AC and Pt cathodes. The addition of ZIF-67 also improved the oxygen reduction reaction rate and decreased charge transfer impedance in the MFC system.

Understanding the current plummeting phenomenon in microbial fuel cells (MFCs)

Dunzhu Li et al.

Summary: The study found that various components, including current, chamber structure, and anode brush loading, have an impact on the current plummeting point of microbial fuel cells (MFCs). The logarithm of CODCPP has a linear relationship with the logarithm of the ratio of external current to anode chamber volume. These findings will aid in designing MFCs to efficiently decrease effluent organic matter concentrations and generate stable current from wastewater.
