A comprehensive review of primary strategies for tar removal in biomass gasification

M. Cortazar et al.

Summary: In the current energy scenario, biomass gasification is considered a key technology for producing heat, power, and biofuels. However, the presence of high levels of tar in syngas poses challenges to the commercialization of biomass gasification technologies. This article provides a comprehensive overview of tar formation and elimination mechanisms, the adverse effects of tar, and tar analyzing techniques. It also summarizes the primary strategies for tar removal, including the impact of operation parameters, catalyst utilization, and reactor design on tar formation and elimination.

Promoting syngas production from steam reforming of toluene using a highly stable Ni/(Mg, Al)Ox catalyst

Jie Ren et al.

Summary: Novel Ni/(Mg, Al)O-x (Ni/MAO) catalysts derived from Ni-Mg-Al hydrotalcites were successfully prepared and used for steam reforming of toluene (SRT), with Ni/MAO-10 exhibiting superior activity and excellent resistance to carbon deposition. The catalyst's high basicity, reducibility, rosette-like morphology, and large specific surface area were confirmed through characterizations, contributing to its exceptional performance in the SRT process.

Enhanced hydrogen production using a tandem biomass pyrolysis and plasma reforming process

Weitao Wang et al.

Summary: This study presents a tandem process that combines cellulose pyrolysis and plasma-assisted reforming for H-2 production. The effects of different parameters on the reaction performance were investigated, and it was found that low temperatures are preferred for non-catalytic plasma reforming, whereas high temperatures are desired for achieving a high H-2 yield and selectivity in the plasma-catalytic reforming system. The use of a catalyst at 550 degrees C resulted in a significantly higher H-2 yield compared to using plasma alone or catalyst alone.

Tunable syngas production from two-stage sorption-enhanced steam gasification of sewage sludge

Xiaoxia Yang et al.

Summary: Syngas, a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, is an important feedstock for the production of chemicals and fuels. The tunable H2/CO ratio of syngas produced through sorption-enhanced steam gasification of sewage sludge offers a promising approach to integrate biomass gasification with syngas application, allowing for the production of value-added products. The potential of two-stage SESG in promoting tar decomposition for enhanced syngas production is also highlighted.

Single-step production of hydrogen-rich syngas from toluene using multifunctional Ni-dolomite catalysts

Tingting Xu et al.

Summary: A low-cost multifunctional catalyst derived from Ni-loaded dolomite is capable of producing hydrogen-rich syngas from toluene in a single reactor. The catalyst could produce syngas containing >70% hydrogen with high cold-gas-efficiency, without deactivation or structural change observed over 10 consecutive cycles. The remarkable performance is attributed to the promotional effects arising from the formation of the MgxNi1-xO solid solution.

Self-regenerable carbon nanofiber supported Fe - Mo2C catalyst for CH4-CO2 assisted reforming of biomass to hydrogen rich syngas

Amoolya D. Lalsare et al.

Summary: A self-regenerable Fe/Fe3C-Mo2C-CNF catalyst was developed and evaluated over 15 cycles of CH4-CO2 assisted biomass reforming, showing potential in producing hydrogen-rich syngas. The catalyst exhibited in-situ regeneration through nucleation on carbon-saturated Fe3Cx sites, with changes in Fe composition and different nanocluster dispersion affecting the synthesis of graphene nanosheets and CNF/CNT. Hydrodeoxygenation reforming of biomass accounted for 40-60% of the oxygenates during the reactions.
