Aerobic granular sludge systems for treating hypersaline pharmaceutical wastewater: Start-up, long-term performances and metabolic function

Yu Jiang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the challenges of treating pharmaceutical wastewater with complex organics, residue pharmaceuticals and high salinity using granular sludge process. While granules could not form in hypersaline pharmaceutical wastewater, successful granule development was achieved with synthetic wastewater and diluted pharmaceutical wastewater. Efficient removal of organics and nitrogen was demonstrated in the diluted wastewater, but a long acclimation period was needed when shifting to complex organic pollutants in pharmaceutical wastewater.

Degradation synergism between sonolysis and photocatalysis for organic pollutants with different hydrophobicity: A perspective of mechanism and application for high mineralization efficiency

Baekha Ryu et al.

Summary: Despite extensive studies, the synergistic mechanisms between sonolysis and photocatalysis for the removal of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) remain uncertain. This study provides a proof-of-concept for the role of photoexcited electrons in splitting sonolysis-induced hydrogen peroxide into hydroxyl radicals, particularly in the bulk phase. The synergistic degradation of hydrophobic POPs in a sonophotocatalytic system varies compared to hydrophilic POPs, with different degradation patterns observed in the gas-liquid interface and bulk liquid phase.

Responses of aerobic granular sludge to fluoroquinolones: Microbial community variations, and antibiotic resistance genes

Yi-Jing Shi et al.

Summary: This study found that under high levels of ammonium, aerobic granular sludge (AGS) showed good removal efficiency for three fluoroquinolones (FQs), with ciprofloxacin (CFX) and norfloxacin (NFX) being more effectively removed. Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) related to FQs tended to exist in denitrifying bacteria, indicating a preference for denitrifiers in the distribution of these elements.
