Renaissance for Phage-Based Bacterial Control

Cory Schwarz et al.

Summary: Bacteriophages, as an underutilized biological resource, have the potential for pathogen control and microbiome editing. Advances in DNA sequencing, bioinformatics, microbial ecology, and synthetic biology have broadened the applications of phages beyond pathogen control, allowing for the manipulation of microbial communities for improved functionalities. Although there are challenges, many obstacles have been overcome, paving the way for phage-based biocontrol and microbiome editing.

Summary: The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) produces a variety of online information resources for biology, including databases for nucleic acid sequences and life science journal citations. It provides search and retrieval operations for most of these data from 35 distinct databases, with E-utilities serving as the programming interface. Several resources received significant updates in the past year.

Increasing Fusobacterium infections with Fusobacterium varium, an emerging pathogen

Se Ju Lee et al.

Summary: This retrospective study investigated the clinical features of patients with Fusobacterium infections and found an increase in cases caused by F. varium, particularly in older patients with a higher proportion of nosocomial infections. The F. nucleatum and F. varium groups had higher in-hospital mortality rates. Risk factors for in-hospital mortality included APACHE II score and serum albumin level.

Clinical Differences in Patients Infected with Fusobacterium and Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Fusobacterium Isolates Recovered at a Tertiary-Care Hospital in Korea

Myungsook Kim et al.

Summary: This study investigated clinical differences among patients infected with Fusobacterium spp. and determined the antimicrobial susceptibility of the isolates. Despite clinical differences, there was no significant difference in mortality rates among patients infected with different species of Fusobacterium. Some Fusobacterium spp. exhibited resistance to certain commonly used antimicrobial agents.

Not All Liver Abscesses Are Created Equal: The Impact of Tylosin and Antibiotic Alternatives on Bovine Liver Abscess Microbial Communities and a First Look at Bacteroidetes-Dominated Communities

Lee J. Pinnell et al.

Summary: Liver abscesses (LAs) are common in cattle and can be attributed to diets high in rapidly fermentable starch. The inclusion of antibiotics reduces the occurrence of LAs. Bacteroidetes were found to be the dominant taxa in LA microbial communities, with low proportions of Fusobacteria. Some Bacteroidetes-dominated abscess communities may originate from other parts of the bovine gut.

Emu: species-level microbial community profiling of full-length 16S rRNA Oxford Nanopore sequencing data

Kristen D. Curry et al.

Summary: 16S ribosomal RNA-based analysis is the standard method for studying microbial community composition. Full-length 16S rRNA gene sequences have the potential to provide species-level accuracy. Emu is an approach that can generate taxonomic abundance profiles from full-length 16S rRNA reads, accurately estimating microbial abundance.

Bacterial community analysis of purulent material from liver abscesses of crossbred cattle and Holstein steers fed finishing diets with or without tylosin

Raghavendra G. Amachawadi et al.

Summary: Liver abscesses in feedlot cattle are polymicrobial infections, primarily caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum. This study used 16S ribosomal RNA amplicon sequence analyses to identify bacterial composition in liver abscesses, finding a dominance of Gram-negative bacteria and Fusobacterium followed by Pseudomonas. Differences in bacterial community composition were not observed between crossbred and Holstein steers fed finishing diets with or without tylosin.

Looking into the future of phage-based control of zoonotic pathogens in food and animal production

Michela Gambino et al.

Summary: Using bacteriophages to control zoonotic pathogens in food and animal production shows promise, but bringing phage products to market remains a challenge. Future research is needed to understand interactions between phages and zoonotic pathogens in complex systems, and a comprehensive approach combining data repository, modeling, multi-omic techniques, and data analysis is proposed to modernize phage-based control.
