Fermentation of Washed Rice Water Increases Beneficial Plant Bacterial Population and Nutrient Concentrations

Abba Nabayi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effect of fermenting washed rice water (WRW) on bacterial population and nutrient composition. The results indicated that fermenting WRW can potentially increase plant growth and enhance soil health, particularly after 3 days of fermentation.

Chemical and Microbial Characterization of Washed Rice Water Waste to Assess Its Potential as Plant Fertilizer and for Increasing Soil Health

Abba Nabayi et al.

Summary: Research was conducted to investigate the effects of rice washing intensities, fermentation periods, and water-to-rice ratios on the nutrient content in washed rice water (WRW), as well as to identify beneficial bacterial species in the fermented WRW. Increasing fermentation period and water-to-rice ratio led to higher concentrations of most elements and available nitrogen forms, while beneficial bacteria were found to assist in increasing nutrient concentrations.

Wastewater from Washed Rice Water as Plant Nutrient Source: Current Understanding and Knowledge Gaps

Nabayi Abba et al.

Summary: Washed rice water (WRW) is a significant wastewater source in households that contains leached nutrients usable as fertilizer. Studies have shown that WRW can enhance vegetable growth and serve as a carbon source for microbial growth. However, research on WRW needs to be more comprehensive in order to fully understand its impact on plant growth and soil fertility.
