Robotic arm-assisted arthroplasty: The latest developments

Xin Chen et al.

Summary: Robotic arm-assisted arthroplasty is a highly accurate and stable method for treating end-stage joint lesions. It combines navigation technology, minimally invasive technology, and precise control technology of the robotic arm to achieve accurate preoperative planning, optimal selection of implants, minimally invasive surgery, and precise placement. It is widely used in the field of joint surgery.

Intraoperative Technology Use Improves Accuracy of Functional Safe Zone Targeting in Total Hip Arthroplasty

Chelsea S. Sicat et al.

Summary: This study compared the accuracy of manual instrumentation, computer-assisted navigation, and robotic-assisted surgery in targeting the functional safe zone in total hip arthroplasty. The results showed that robotic-assisted surgery was significantly more accurate than both manual instrumentation and computer-assisted navigation in targeting both anteversion and inclination. Computer-assisted navigation had slightly higher accuracy than manual instrumentation, but the differences were not statistically significant.

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on psychotropic medication uptake: time-series analysis of a population-wide cohort

Aideen Maguire et al.

Summary: This study examines changes in psychotropic medication uptake before and during the COVID-19 pandemic using nine years of linked administrative data. The results show that during the restrictions, certain demographic groups had higher than expected uptake of hypnotic medication and anxiolytic medication.

One Year Later: The Lasting Effect of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Elective Hip and Knee Arthroplasty

Mohammad S. Abdelaal et al.

Summary: This study found a 20% decline in the volume of total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) surgeries during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, patients had shorter hospital stays, higher rates of home discharge, and a greater likelihood of undergoing surgery at outpatient facilities. There were no differences in complications or readmissions. Additionally, surgeons experienced a decrease in charges and payments.

New technology-based assistive techniques in total knee arthroplasty: A Bayesian network meta-analysis and systematic review

Jiaxiang Gao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the radiological and clinical efficiency of robot-assisted surgery (RAS), computer-assisted navigation system (CAS), and conventional (CON) total knee arthroplasty (TKA) through Bayesian network meta-analysis and systematic review. The results showed that technology-based assistive techniques (CAS and RAS) may surpass the traditional CON-TKA in terms of higher radiological accuracy while maintaining comparable clinical outcomes.

The current state of robotics in total knee arthroplasty

Jean-Pierre St Mart et al.

Summary: Robotic total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has advantages in improving component positioning and reducing alignment outliers, especially with current semi-active systems that incorporate haptic feedback to minimize iatrogenic soft tissue injury. However, limitations of current robotic technology include high upfront costs, steep learning curves, and lack of long-term outcomes. Short-term gains and technical reliability associated with current systems may justify continued investment in robotic technology, but further long-term data are needed to fully determine the cost-effectiveness of newer robotic systems.
