Risk for Reinfection After SARS-CoV-2: A Living, Rapid Review for American College of Physicians Practice Points on the Role of the Antibody Response in Conferring Immunity Following SARS-CoV-2 Infection

Mark Helfand et al.

Summary: This study synthesized evidence on protection against reinfection after SARS-CoV-2 infection. The results showed that before the emergence of the Delta and Omicron variants, individuals with recent infection had strong protection against symptomatic reinfections for 7 months compared with unvaccinated, previously uninfected individuals. However, the durability of protection in the setting of the Delta and Omicron variants is unknown. Additional studies are needed to assess the protection in immunocompromised persons, racial and ethnic subgroups, and asymptomatic index case patients.

Incidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection among COVID-19 vaccinated and unvaccinated healthcare personnel, first responders, and other essential and frontline workers: Eight US locations, January-September 2021

Allison L. Naleway et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of changes in estimates of COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness on the incidence of laboratory-confirmed infection among frontline workers at high risk for SARS-CoV-2. The results showed that COVID-19 vaccination was significantly associated with a lower risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection despite the predominance of the Delta variant. Additionally, the study found that facemask use provided additional protective benefits for both unvaccinated and vaccinated frontline workers.

Protection with a Third Dose of mRNA Vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 Variants in Frontline Workers

Sarang K. Yoon et al.

Summary: In a group of frontline healthcare workers, a third dose of an mRNA vaccine provided 91% protection against SARS-CoV-2 infection with the delta variant and 60% protection against the omicron variant.

Increased risk of SARS-CoV-2 reinfection associated with emergence of Omicron in South Africa

Juliet R. C. Pulliam et al.

Summary: This study provides two methods for monitoring reinfection trends in routine surveillance data. The results suggest immune evasion by the Omicron variant in previously infected individuals in South Africa, and there has been an increase in the risk of having a third infection since mid-November 2021.

Outcomes of SARS-CoV-2 Infection in Unvaccinated Compared With Vaccinated Solid Organ Transplant Recipients: A Propensity Matched Cohort Study

Victoria G. Hall et al.

Summary: This study examines the outcomes and severity of COVID-19 infection in solid organ transplant recipients who have been vaccinated. The findings suggest that vaccinated patients who develop breakthrough infections have similar disease severity to unvaccinated patients. This highlights the importance of alternative strategies for this population, considering the need for multiple vaccine doses in SOT recipients.

Protection and Waning of Natural and Hybrid Immunity to SARS-CoV-2

Yair Goldberg et al.

Summary: This study used data from the Israeli Ministry of Health database to compare the rate of infection with the time since immunity-confering events. The results showed that the protection against reinfection decreased over time for individuals who had previously been infected or vaccinated, but it was still higher than the protection conferred after the same time had elapsed since the second dose of vaccine among those who were previously uninfected. A single dose of vaccine after infection reinforced protection against reinfection.

Christian Holm Hansen et al.

Summary: The study investigated the protection against SARS-CoV-2 reinfection, with results showing an 80.5% protection rate for individuals previously infected. Even in the population aged 65 years and older, the protection rate against reinfection reached 47.1%, with no significant differences observed by gender or time since infection.
