Towards azeotropic MeOH-MTBE separation using pervaporation chitosan-based deep eutectic solvent membranes

Roberto Castro-Munoz et al.

Summary: This research successfully synthesized a novel L-proline:sulfolane deep eutectic solvent and used it in combination with chitosan as a polymer phase to prepare sustainable bio-based membranes. Microscopic analysis showed that the membranes had a completely homogeneous structure, and exhibited higher separation efficiency in separating methanol-methyl tert-butyl ether mixtures compared to pristine chitosan membranes.

Enhancing the organophilic separations with mixed matrix membranes of PIM-1 and bimetallic Zn/Co-ZIF filler

Tahreem Hafeez Butt et al.

Summary: Novel mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) were fabricated by incorporating bimetallic Zn/Co-ZIF nanoparticles into the prototypical polymer of intrinsic microporosity (PIM-1). The addition of Zn/Co-ZIF nanoparticles enhanced the hydrophobicity of the MMMs and improved the separation performance of ethanol/water and butanol/water mixtures. It was found that Zn/Co-ZIF/PIM-20 wt% membrane showed the highest separation and flux among all the membranes tested.

Graphene oxide modified CuBTC incorporated PVDF membranes for saltwater desalination via pervaporation

Dipeshkumar D. Kachhadiya et al.

Summary: Recently developed metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous materials that can be used for separating contaminants from water. In this study, a thin-film composite (TFC) membrane made of GO@CuBTC incorporated polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) was investigated for desalination of saltwater. The experimental results suggest that GO modified CuBTC could be an important material for the preparation of hydrophilic pervaporative desalination membranes.

Fabrication of a novel hybrid MIL-53(Fe)/MoSe2 with outstanding photocatalytic performances

Xiandi Guo et al.

Summary: Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a new type of porous crystal nanomaterials with potential for various applications. However, their photocatalytic applications are limited due to the rapid recombination rate of charge carriers. In this study, the researchers successfully enhanced the sunlight-driven photocatalytic activity of a MOF material by constructing a hybrid with MoSe2 nanoparticles. This work provides a new strategy to improve the photocatalytic performance of MOF nanomaterials.

Novel Thin Film Nanocomposite Membranes Based on Chitosan Succinate Modified with Fe-BTC for Enhanced Pervaporation Dehydration of Isopropanol

Katsiaryna Burts et al.

Summary: This study developed novel thin film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes based on biopolymer chitosan succinate (ChS) modified with the metal organic framework iron 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate (Fe-BTC) to enhance pervaporation dehydration. The TFN membranes showed improved permeation flux compared to the reference TFC ChS membrane. The best transport properties were observed in TFN membranes with 40 wt.% Fe-BTC prepared by dynamic technique and TFN membranes with 5 wt.% Fe-BTC developed by physical adsorption.

Deep Eutectic Solvents: A Review of Fundamentals and Applications

Benworth B. Hansen et al.

Summary: Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) exhibit significant depressions in melting points and tunable physicochemical properties, but there is still a lack of predictive understanding of their microscopic mechanisms and structure-property relationships. Research on complex hydrogen bonding is crucial for a deeper understanding and development of fundamental frameworks for DESs.
