Vertical distributions of atmospheric HONO and the corresponding OH radical production by photolysis at the suburb area of Shanghai, China

Siyu He et al.

Summary: Multi-AXis-Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS) measurements were conducted in a suburb of Shanghai to study the distribution and sources of HONO. HONO was mainly found near the surface, but occasionally high values were observed at high altitudes. The positive correlation between HONO and aerosols indicates the importance of photo-enhanced heterogeneous reactions in the production of HONO at high altitudes.

Summary: This study conducted continuous measurements of HONO and related parameters at an urban site in Beijing during intense summer and winter campaigns, revealing highly variable HONO levels and deriving additional unknown sources. Using a box model based on MCM, the research explored the chemistry and sources of HONO, finding differences in the major sources of HONO between summer and winter.

Elucidating the effect of HONO on O3 pollution by a case study in southwest China

Yiming Yang et al.

Summary: The photolysis of nitrous add (HONO) is a major source of atmospheric hydroxyl radicals (OH) and plays a significant role in tropospheric photochemical reactions for ozone (O-3) production. Field observations show that higher HONO concentrations in the early morning contribute to elevated OH radical levels, leading to higher O-3 peak values, particularly during periods of severe O-3 pollution.

Vertical distributions of wintertime atmospheric nitrogenous compounds and the corresponding OH radicals production in Leshan, southwest China

Chengzhi Xing et al.

Summary: Ground-based MAX-DOAS observations were conducted in Leshan, southwest China, from December 2 to December 21, 2018, for the first time in the Sichuan Basin. The study found characteristic ranges and averages for aerosol extinction, NO2, and HONO concentrations, as well as the importance of nitrogen oxides for atmospheric oxidative capacity.

Observations by Ground-Based MAX-DOAS of the Vertical Characters of Winter Pollution and the Influencing Factors of HONO Generation in Shanghai, China

Summary: This study analyzed the vertical distribution of air pollutants in Shanghai using ground-based multi-axis differential optical absorption spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS) measurements, providing insights into the formation of HONO and contributing to the deployment of advanced measurement platforms of regional air pollution over eastern China. The research revealed that the sources of HONO varied at different altitudes, with industrial emissions and secondary sources playing a role in the concentration of pollutants at various layers in the atmosphere.
