Self-Reported Symptoms of Temporomandibular Disorders: Relationship with Psychologic Well-Being, Psychologic Distress, and Oral Health-Related Quality of Life

Adrian Ujin Yap et al.

Summary: The study investigates the relationships between self-reported temporomandibular disorder (TMD) symptoms, psychological well-being (PWB), psychological distress (PD), and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). Participants with more TMD symptoms tend to have lower scores in PWB, higher levels of PD, and poorer OHRQoL compared to those with fewer or no symptoms.

Oral health-related quality of life of patients with acute and chronic temporomandibular disorder diagnostic subtypes

Ye Cao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of different subtypes and chronicity of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). The results showed that painful TMDs had a greater negative impact on OHRQoL compared to nonpainful TMDs. Additionally, chronicity of TMDs only affected the OHRQoL of painful TMDs. Understanding the subtypes and chronicity of TMDs is important in assessing their impact on OHRQoL.

Distribution of anxiety and depression among different subtypes of temporomandibular disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Pedro Henrique Feres Reis et al.

Summary: This systematic review investigated the distribution and severity of anxiety and depression in patients diagnosed with different subtypes of temporomandibular disorder (TMD). The findings suggest that patients with myofascial pain are more anxious and more depressed than patients with other subtypes of TMD. Proper assessment of the psychological state of patients is essential for offering adequate treatment and management of each specific subtype of TMD.

Bethea A. Kleykamp et al.

Summary: This systematic review evaluated the presence of comorbid conditions among patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). The results showed a high prevalence of chronic pain comorbidities among patients with TMDs, with over 50% reporting chronic back pain, myofascial syndrome, and chronic stomach pain. Psychiatric disorders were less commonly studied in this population.

Presence of widespread pain predicts comorbidities and treatment response in temporomandibular disorders patients

Jung Hwan Jo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the presence of widespread pain in a well-defined TMD group and found that patients with widespread pain showed higher somatization and anxiety levels. Treatment response was also less in the widespread pain group. The study suggests that the WPI could be a useful tool in predicting TMD treatment response and identifying patients with higher psychological distress.

Somatic and temporomandibular disorder symptoms-Idioms of psychological distress in Southeast Asian youths

Adrian Ujin Yap et al.

Summary: The study found that somatic and TMD symptoms are common in Southeast Asian youths and may be a manifestation of psychological distress. Significant differences in psychological distress were observed among youths with varying severity of somatic and TMD symptoms, with female gender, TMD symptoms, and stress identified as risk factors for somatic symptoms. Additionally, somatic symptoms and stress were identified as potential factors for TMDs.

Temporomandibular disorder subtypes, emotional distress, impaired sleep, and oral health-related quality of life in Asian patients

Jie Lei et al.

Summary: The study found that patients with painful temporomandibular disorders have higher levels of emotional distress, sleep impairments, and poorer oral health-related quality of life. Additionally, there is a significant association between painful TMDs and increased stress levels and decreased OHRQoL. Routine evaluation of biopsychosocial distress is important for these patients.
