Dihydrolevoglucosenone (Cyrene™) as a versatile biobased solvent for lignin fractionation, processing, and chemistry

Antoine Duval et al.

Summary: The solubility of technical lignins depends on their structure and extraction process, with only a few polar aprotic solvents capable of fully dissolving them. This study evaluated Cyrene as an alternative solvent and found it to be effective in fully dissolving KL in Cyrene-water mixtures, as well as suitable for refining and chemically modifying lignins. Cyrene shows promise as a green solvent for lignin fractionation, processing, and chemistry, promoting greener processes when solvents are necessary.

Efficient fractionation of woody biomass hemicelluloses using cholinium amino acids-based deep eutectic solvents and their aqueous mixtures

Yang Wang et al.

Summary: Novel and green cholinium amino acids-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs) were synthesized and used for hemicellulose fractionation from poplar. The presence of water in DESs facilitated the dissociation of hemicellulose, and DES CL: U-5 with 5 wt% water demonstrated the highest hemicellulose yield of 59.2%. The DES also showed recyclability with a hemicellulose yield of 40.5% after being reused three times.

Rheological Characterization of Mixed Aqueous Solutions of Enzymatic Hydrolysis Lignin and Ionic Liquid

Yingchong Ma et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigated the rheological properties of enzymatic hydrolysis lignin in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride solutions. The results showed that the viscosity of the lignin solutions increased with the increase of lignin content, and the mass of ionic liquid significantly affected the viscosity of the lignin solution. Most of the lignin solutions displayed shear thinning behavior, and the viscosity decreased with the increase of temperature. The viscosity activation energy increased with the increase of lignin or ionic liquid mass fraction.

Xiankun Huang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the pyrolysis characteristics of lignosulfonates and de-alkalized lignin using various experimental methods. Differences were observed in the pyrolysis temperature, volatile matter, and product composition among different lignin samples. The findings provide important theoretical and practical guidance for solving engineering problems related to lignin waste pyrolysis in papermaking wastewater.

LEO and LiMO Fuels: Structural and Rheological Characterization of Solvolytically Fractionated Lignin Dispersed in Alcohols

Saket Kumar et al.

Summary: The mild thermal solvolysis of lignin in alcohols is a promising technology for obtaining carbon-neutral fuels. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) data and cryo-TEM images show that lignin exists in two states in ethanol and methanol dispersions: individual lignin coil structures and their aggregates. The formation of polymer networks by the coil structures is responsible for the stability of the dispersions at high solid percentages.

Efficient pretreatment using dimethyl isosorbide as a biobased solvent for potential complete biomass valorization

Shuang Yang et al.

Summary: This study reports the use of dimethyl isosorbide (DMI) as a solvent for fractionating lignocellulosic biomass into its main components. The pretreatment of Eucalyptus using DMI/H2O co-solvents achieves high lignin removal efficiency and good cellulose retention. The addition of water suppresses lignin condensation and produces lignin with high purity. Efficient fibrillation of obtained pulp leads to energy-saving potential.

Robust superbase-based emerging solvents for highly efficient dissolution of cellulose

Qiaoling Liu et al.

Summary: The study successfully designed six novel superbase-based solvents that can efficiently dissolve cellulose at lower temperatures, with DBN-PyO-4 showing the best performance. The good performance of the prepared superbase-based solvents on cellulose dissolution resulted from the synergistic effect of their ability to form hydrogen bonds and their polarizability.
