Efficient pretreatment using dimethyl isosorbide as a biobased solvent for potential complete biomass valorization

Shuang Yang et al.

Summary: This study reports the use of dimethyl isosorbide (DMI) as a solvent for fractionating lignocellulosic biomass into its main components. The pretreatment of Eucalyptus using DMI/H2O co-solvents achieves high lignin removal efficiency and good cellulose retention. The addition of water suppresses lignin condensation and produces lignin with high purity. Efficient fibrillation of obtained pulp leads to energy-saving potential.
