Bimetal metal-organic framework hollow nanoprisms for enhanced electrochemical oxygen evolution

Fengzhan Sun et al.

Summary: Carboxylate-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with hierarchical porous structure and redox-active metal centers have shown promising electrocatalytic activity for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this study, uniform hollow structured Fe-free bi-metal (Co, Ni) MOF-74 nanoprisms were successfully synthesized using a solvothermal method. The CoNi MOF-74 exhibited high electrocatalytic activity for OER in alkaline condition, and it maintained its performance for 100 hours with 83.25% retention of current density. The enhanced catalytic activity can be attributed to the amorphous Ni-Co (oxy)hydroxide and electron transfer from Ni2+ to Co2+. This work reveals the potential application of MOF materials as efficient electrocatalysts for OER.

A yolk-shell structure construction for metal-organic frameworks toward an enhanced electrochemical water splitting catalysis

Zhenhang Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, a Ni MOF based on nickel foam was synthesized and modified with Fe, resulting in a material with a yolk-shell structure. The introduction of Fe improves the stability of the material and increases its specific surface area to facilitate the construction of active sites. The Ni MOF-Fe-2 exhibits better electrochemical performance than most reported transition metal-based electrocatalysts, requiring a lower overpotential for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and showing extraordinary stability during water splitting.

Precursor-converted formation of bimetallic-organic framework nanosheets for efficient oxygen evolution reaction

Lei Xia et al.

Summary: In this study, NiFe-MOF@NF nanosheets were prepared using a two-step procedure, and exhibited excellent catalytic performance in the anodic OER process. The nanosheets showed a small overpotential and impressive long-term catalytic durability and stability, mainly due to the substantial active metal centres, enhanced electrical conductivity, and favorable kinetics. This strategy is of great significance for the development of highly efficient metal electrocatalysts and the application of metal catalysts in the OER.

Tip-Enhanced Electric Field: A New Mechanism Promoting Mass Transfer in Oxygen Evolution Reactions

Peng Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, NiFe alloy nanocone arrays were used to enhance the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) rate and outperform state-of-the-art OER electrocatalysts. The high-curvature tips on the nanocones induce a local electric field that significantly increases the concentration of hydroxide ions near the active sites, promoting OER activity. This local field enhanced OER kinetics is suggested to be a generic effect applicable to other OER catalysts.

Understanding the Evolution of Cobalt-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks in Electrocatalysis for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Xiaowei Cai et al.

Summary: Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have shown promising potential as electrode materials for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). This study revealed that MOFs with tetrahedral Co sites exhibit continuous active sites in the OER, while those with octahedral sites are inert. Co-N coordination is more favorable for electrochemical activation than Co-O coordination, leading to the gradual increase in activity of the MOF in the OER process.
