Enhancing anaerobic digestion of pharmaceutical industries wastewater with the composite addition of zero valent iron (ZVI) and granular activated carbon (GAC)

Chenbo Dai et al.

Summary: The combination of ZVI and GAC was found to enhance anaerobic digestion of pharmaceutical wastewater, increasing COD removal and methane production while reducing the levels of toxic compounds and biotoxicity. This was attributed to the establishment of direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET), which also led to changes in microbial community composition and pathways of methane production.

Synergetic effect of nano zero-valent iron and activated carbon on high-level ciprofloxacin removal in hydrolysis-acidogenesis of anaerobic digestion

Mingdian Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of adding nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI) and activated carbon (AC) on the removal of high-level ciprofloxacin during the hydrolysis-acidogenesis stage of anaerobic digestion. The results showed a significant increase in the degradation rate of ciprofloxacin and a noticeable improvement in volatile fatty acids yield. Microbial community analysis indicated enhanced presence of bacteria related to ciprofloxacin degradation in the NZVI/AC group. Overall, the addition of NZVI/AC showed promising results for ciprofloxacin wastewater treatment.
