Effect of Climatic Precession on Dansgaard-Oeschger-Like Oscillations

Yuta Kuniyoshi et al.

Summary: Using the climate model MIROC4m, this study simulates self-sustained oscillations of millennial-scale periodicity in the climate and Atlantic meridional overturning circulation under glacial conditions. The mechanism of these oscillations is examined by considering extreme climatic precession and its impact on boreal seasonality and sea ice thickness.

The marine δ18O record overestimates continental ice volume during Marine Isotope Stage 3

April S. Dalton et al.

Summary: There is disagreement about how much of the marine 818O signal is driven by ice volume change. This study examines the topic by combining geological data and modeling work for Marine Isotope Stage 3 (MIS 3). The results indicate that the inferred ice volume from the marine 818O record does not fit within the plausible extent of Northern Hemisphere ice sheets during MIS 3. Instead, a lower global mean sea level is inferred from geological constraints and modeling. Therefore, caution is advised when using the marine 818O record as an indicator of continental ice without sufficient geological constraints.

Atmospheric CO2 control of spontaneous millennial-scale ice age climate oscillations

Guido Vettoretti et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that nonlinear self-sustained climate oscillations can appear spontaneously within specific glacial-level atmospheric CO2 concentrations, with CO2 playing a key role in controlling the relative rates of internal forcing and feedback in the system. These oscillations exist in the Earth system and may be influenced by internal climate variability and external noise-induced transitions.

Dansgaard-Oeschger and Heinrich event temperature anomalies in the North Atlantic set by sea ice, frontal position and thermocline structure

J. B. Pedro et al.

Summary: By utilizing eighteen timescale-synchronised near-surface temperature reconstructions spanning 10-50 thousand years before present, the study clarifies the regional expression of Dansgaard-Oeschger (D-O) and Heinrich (H) events in the North Atlantic. The spatial patterns of temperature anomalies in different regions are dominated by coupled changes in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning, sea ice extent, polar front position, and thermocline structure.

A salty deep ocean as a prerequisite for glacial termination

Gregor Knorr et al.

Summary: The study suggests that an increased importance of salt versus temperature stratification in the glacial deep South Atlantic reduces the cooling effect of upwelling waters, leading to amplified surface ocean temperature response in the Southern Ocean during deglaciation. Using a coupled atmosphere-ocean general circulation model, it is demonstrated that deep-ocean salinity stratification stabilizes warm waters in the deep ocean, contributing to rapid Antarctic warming during glacial terminations. Heat stored in the deep ocean due to salinity stratification is found to play a significant role in the warming of Antarctica during deglaciation in the middle to late Pleistocene.

Abrupt changes in the global carbon cycle during the last glacial period

Thomas K. Bauska et al.

Summary: Research shows that during the last glacial period, atmospheric CO2 closely correlated with Antarctic temperature on millennial and centennial scales. While Southern Hemisphere processes played a major role in CO2 variability during the last glacial period, Northern Hemisphere processes were crucial drivers of centennial-scale variability.Southern processes largely defined Antarctic climate during the last glacial period, but Northern Hemisphere events strongly impacted short, centennial-scale changes.

A new global ice sheet reconstruction for the past 80000 years

Evan J. Gowan et al.

Summary: The uncertainty of past global ice sheet evolution, especially the issue of missing ice volume during the Last Glacial Maximum, has been a challenge. Researchers have developed a global ice sheet reconstruction for the past 80,000 years, resolving the missing ice problem during the Last Glacial Maximum. However, discrepancies with proxy-based sea level reconstructions before the Last Glacial Maximum highlight the complexity of the relationship between marine delta O-18 and sea level changes.

Rapid Atlantification along the Fram Strait at the beginning of the 20th century

Tommaso Tesi et al.

Summary: The recent expansion of Atlantic waters into the Arctic Ocean is clear evidence of rapid changes occurring, and understanding the past variability of this Atlantification is crucial to provide a longer perspective on modern Arctic changes. Reconstructions based on paleoceanographic records show rapid changes began in the early 20th century, before documented Atlantification. Comparison with regional records suggests a poleward expansion of subtropical waters since the end of the Little Ice Age.

Millennial scale feedbacks determine the shape and rapidity of glacial termination

Stephen Barker et al.

Summary: During the Late Pleistocene, terminations marked major transitions at the end of glacial cycles, with abrupt shifts in the ocean/atmosphere system serving as a common component of deglaciation. Recent advancements in understanding these terminations have shed light on uncertainties surrounding their specific role, particularly concerning sea-level variability. Innovations in numerical climate simulation and geological records have opened up new avenues for research, highlighting key remaining uncertainties in the interaction between millennial and orbital timescale variability.

Past abrupt changes, tipping points and cascading impacts in the Earth system

Victor Brovkin et al.

Summary: The synthesis of intervals of rapid climatic change evident in the geological record reveals Earth system processes and tipping points that could lead to similar events in the future. Abrupt changes in the Earth system often arise from slow changes in one component that pass a critical threshold, impacting coupled climate-ecological-social systems.

Impact of Southern Ocean surface conditions on deep ocean circulation during the LGM: a model analysis

Fanny Lhardy et al.

Summary: The study highlights the significance of changes in water mass distribution during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) in contributing to the drop in atmospheric CO2 concentration. Modeling a glacial Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) remains a challenge, with discrepancies in simulating water mass distribution from proxy records. Surface conditions in the Southern Ocean play a crucial role in accurately representing bottom water properties, while modeling choices related to sea-ice export and convection processes have a large impact on water mass properties.

The PMIP4 Last Glacial Maximum experiments: preliminary results and comparison with the PMIP3 simulations

Summary: The new generation of climate models used for Last Glacial Maximum simulations show a wider range of global average temperatures and precipitation compared to the previous generation. The PMIP4 simulations generally depict a colder and drier global state than the PMIP3-CMIP5 simulations.

Summary: This study conducted numerical experiments targeting distinctive past time periods using the MIROC-ES2L model, including the Last Glacial Maximum, two interglacial periods, and climate changes over the past millennium. Globally, there was reasonable agreement between model simulations and proxy data archives, but regional discrepancies remained. The model showed some deficiencies in capturing certain past climate change processes.

Summary: The Last Interglacial period (LIG) is characterized by increased summer insolation at high northern latitudes, leading to significant changes in the terrestrial and marine cryosphere. Analysis of climate models in relation to Arctic sea ice during the LIG shows varying results, with some models underestimating and others overestimating sea ice cover. Differences between models may be attributed to variations in short-wave anomalies, albedo, optical depth of clouds, and ocean circulation changes during the LIG period.
