Work function of the oxygen functionalized graphenic surfaces - Integral experimental and theoretical approach

M. Bialoruski et al.

Summary: This study thoroughly investigated the effect of oxygen plasma functionalization of the graphenic surface. The experimental results were corroborated by DFT molecular modeling. It was found that oxygen substantially modified the electrodonor properties of the surface. The work function of the graphenic surface changed in a non-monotonous way upon plasma treatment time. The obtained results provide rational guidelines for the design and optimization of graphenic materials.

Stability of oxygen-functionalized graphenic surfaces: Theoretical and experimental insights into electronic properties and wettability

Joanna Duch et al.

Summary: Introduction of polar oxygen functional groups into carbon surfaces by plasma treatment results in significant changes in their wettability and electronic properties. The study combines theoretical calculations and experimental techniques to explore the chemical nature and stability of these functionalities, showing that surface oxygen functionalization leads to changes in work function and water contact angle. Monitoring over time reveals the recovery of electronic properties and wettability, while SIMS depth profiling highlights changes in surface composition below XPS sensitivity.
