Heavy metal-induced stress in eukaryotic algae-mechanisms of heavy metal toxicity and tolerance with particular emphasis on oxidative stress in exposed cells and the role of antioxidant response

Beatrycze Nowicka

Summary: This review summarizes the knowledge of heavy metal toxicity, oxidative stress, and antioxidant response in eukaryotic algae. The types of ROS and their damage to cellular components are described, followed by detailed characterization of heavy metals, including their properties, sources of contamination, toxicity mechanisms, and stress symptoms. The review also covers low-molecular-weight antioxidants and ROS-detoxifying enzymes, their properties, cellular localization, and their occurrence in algae belonging to different clades. Additionally, other mechanisms providing tolerance to metal ions are briefly outlined at the end.

Antioxidant and Signaling Role of Plastid-Derived Isoprenoid Quinones and Chromanols

Beatrycze Nowicka et al.

Summary: Plant prenyllipids, especially isoprenoid chromanols and quinols, act as efficient antioxidants protecting membranes and storage lipids from oxidative stress. Plants are vulnerable to oxidative damage due to oxygenic photosynthesis generating ROS and the photosynthetic electron transfer chain as a source of ROS. Plastidic antioxidants play a crucial role in preventing oxidative stress under various stress factors, while also contributing to physiological processes through redox signaling.

Oxidative stress limits growth of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (Chlorophyta, Chlamydomonadales) exposed to copper ions at the early stage of culture growth

Beatrycze Nowicka et al.

Summary: Copper is essential for the growth of photosynthetic organisms, but can be highly toxic at high concentrations. This study investigated the antioxidant response of a green microalga exposed to high copper concentrations, finding that enhanced oxidative stress occurred in the early stages of growth.
