Do energy and environmental taxes stimulate or inhibit renewable energy deployment in the European Union?

Eyup Dogan et al.

Summary: The modern lifestyle and economic development of the European Union countries are closely connected to high energy consumption and environmental pollution. Renewable energy has arisen as one solution to this problem, even though the obstacles and challenges regarding the deployment of renewable energy lie in high costs, technology and legislation. The investigation of the determinants of renewable energy has become very attractive and popular because of the Sustainable Development Goals and COP26 targets. Therefore, this paper aims to explore the role of energy taxes and environmental taxes in addition to that of economic and environmental indicators in renewable energy development for the panel of EU countries by applying reliable and robust econometric techniques to the annual data from 1995 to 2019. The empirical results suggest that an increase in economic growth and oil prices supports renewable energy while environmental taxes and energy taxes have a negative impact on renewable energy deployment in EU countries. Thus, it is crucial to reform the structure of taxes to support the use of renewable energy. In addition, increasing environmental taxes to transform EU countries into energy-efficient economies will require additional EU policy adjustments.

Does green technology advancement and renewable electricity standard impact on carbon emissions in China: role of green finance

Qing Xia

Summary: To achieve carbon neutrality and peak carbon emissions, it is important to accelerate the growth of renewable energy. The use of green technology advancements can balance economic growth with environmental security. However, there is a lack of empirical research on the connection between green technology advancements and CO2 emissions, particularly in developing countries. The findings of this study suggest that urbanization and green technological developments have a positive impact on reducing CO2 emissions, while investments in renewable energy and the industrial sector fail to reduce pollution levels. The positive and negative coefficient of income per capita indicates that the inverted U-shaped Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis is valid in Chinese provinces.

Asymmetric effect of political stability on production-based CO2 emissions in the UK: long-run evidence from nonlinear ARDL and frequency domain causality

Mustafa Tevfik Kartal et al.

Summary: This study examines the effect of political stability on environmental degradation in the long run for the United Kingdom. The empirical analysis considers trade openness, renewable energy, and economic growth as explanatory variables for production-based carbon dioxide emissions. The results show that political stability has a significant effect on CO2 emissions, with positive shocks having a stronger impact than negative shocks. Economic growth has an increasing effect, while renewable energy has a decreasing effect on CO2 emissions. The study also finds a causality effect from political risk, economic growth, renewable energy consumption, and trade openness to CO2 emissions.

Exploring renewable energy, financial development, environmental quality, and economic growth nexus: new evidence from composite indices for environmental quality and financial development

Hossein Ali Fakher et al.

Summary: This research examines the association between trade, financial development, consumption of renewable energy, environmental quality, foreign direct investment, and economic growth in both low- and high-income countries. The findings show that renewable energy consumption and environmental quality contribute to economic growth in high-income nations but not in low-income countries. Financial development plays a crucial role in boosting economic growth in both high- and low-income countries. Trade openness stimulates economic growth in high-income countries but hinders it in low-income countries. Causality analysis reveals different hypotheses, such as the conservation hypothesis and feedback hypothesis, in explaining the relationship between renewable energy consumption and economic growth in low- and high-income countries. One-way causality from growth to environmental quality and bidirectional causality between environmental quality and economic growth are established. Comprehensive environmental and economic policies are recommended.

The effect of renewable energy development, market regulation, and environmental innovation on CO2 emissions in BRICS countries

Shah Abbas et al.

Summary: The relationship between energy, environment, and economic growth has gained significant attention, but environmental sustainability remains a global challenge. This study examines the impact of renewable energy development, market regulation, and environment-related innovation on CO2 emissions in the BRICS countries from 1990 to 2020. The findings reveal a long-term symmetric and asymmetric relationship between renewable energy development, market regulation, environment-related innovation, and CO2 emissions. Market regulation plays a crucial mediating role in this relationship. The study suggests that the BRICS countries should prioritize environment-related innovation and renewable energy development, implement market-based environmental regulation policies, emphasize environmental taxes, and expand renewable energy and innovation to achieve environmental sustainability.

Monetary and energy policy interlinkages: The case of renewable energy in the US

Shabir Mohsin Hashmi et al.

Summary: The increasing threat of environmental deterioration has led to a greater focus on the adoption of renewable energy (RE). However, there are various socioeconomic factors that limit the proportion of RE compared to non-renewable energy (NRE). This study investigates the influence of monetary policy (MP) on renewable energy consumption (REC) in the United States, and finds that expansionary monetary policy (EMP) promotes REC in both the short-run and long-run, while contractionary monetary policy (CMP) has the opposite effect. Based on these findings, the study suggests implementing an EMP to escalate REC and providing special incentives during periods of CMP to offset its detrimental impact. Additionally, policymakers are advised to consider the role of MP, particularly interest rates, in the decision-making process regarding the choice of RE as the preferred energy type.
