Application of proper orthogonal decomposition in particle image velocimetry in ocean engineering

Chun-yu Guo et al.

Summary: Particle image velocimetry (PIV) is important in flow measurement. Eliminating the effects of overexposure and shadow in particle images is urgent in detailed flow measurement of ocean engineering. This study verified the superiority of the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) filter in pre-and postprocessing compared with traditional mathematical filters, and applied it to the wake field measurement of bulk carrier.

Hydrodynamic mechanism of Misgurnus anguillicaudatus during turning maneuvers

Chun-yu Guo et al.

Summary: This study explores the kinematic and dynamic characteristics of Misgurnus anguillicaudatus during turning maneuvers, providing insights into the propulsion mechanism of aquatic organisms and guiding the design of fish-like propulsion devices. The results reveal the formation of vortices and jets, with suction dominating the thrust mechanism. The study also introduces the use of proper orthogonal decomposition for noise filtering and flow field reconstruction.

Fluid dynamics of a self-propelled biomimetic underwater vehicle with pectoral fins

Ningyu Li et al.

Summary: The fluid dynamics of a biomimetic underwater vehicle with pectoral fins were studied using the immersed boundary method. The method's capability to handle fluid-body interaction was validated, and a parametric study was conducted to analyze key parameters' effects on the vehicle's dynamic response. It was found that the pectoral fin propulsors can induce larger forward velocity in a shorter time period as motion frequency or rolling amplitude increases.
