Measuring quantities of trace elements and probabilistic health risk assessment in fruit juices (traditional and commercial) marketed in Iran

Hadis Karami et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the concentration of trace elements in 150 fruit juice samples and assessed the potential non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks. The results showed that the concentration of toxic elements in the juice samples was low, but long-term exposure could have significant health implications.

Arsenic concentration in topsoil of central Chile is associated with aberrant methylation of P53 gene in human blood cells: a cross-sectional study

Eva Madrid et al.

Summary: Gene expression can be modified in people exposed to high concentrations of heavy metals. This study in Chile found that residents living near an industrial complex with high levels of heavy metals in soil had a significantly higher proportion of methylation in the promoter region of the p53 tumor suppressor gene compared to control areas. This is the first study in Chile to consider the association between heavy metal exposure and DNA methylation. The findings suggest the need for further research to support decisions on environmental remediation or prevention of exposure.

Additive and Interactive Associations of Environmental and Sociodemographic Factors with the Genotypes of Three Glutathione S-Transferase Genes in Relation to the Blood Arsenic Concentrations of Children in Jamaica

Mohammad H. Rahbar et al.

Summary: Arsenic exposure in children in Jamaica mainly comes from dietary intake due to the presence of arsenic in the soil. The study investigates the association of environmental factors, sociodemographic characteristics, and gene-environment interactions with blood arsenic levels in Jamaican children. The results suggest that environmental factors, such as age, parental education levels, and dietary intake, are significantly associated with blood arsenic concentrations. Furthermore, gene-environment interactions indicate that children with specific gene variants may have different susceptibility to arsenic exposure depending on their dietary habits, such as avocado consumption.

Water quality assessment and evaluation of human health risk of drinking water from source to point of use at Thulamela municipality, Limpopo Province

N. Luvhimbi et al.

Summary: The physico-chemical and bacteriological quality of drinking water supplied by the municipality in Thulamela municipality, South Africa was evaluated. The study found high levels of E. coli and total coliform contamination in the water samples from street taps and household storage containers. Many households do not treat their water before use and experience constant water supply interruptions. However, the levels of trace metals in the drinking water were within permissible range. The study also determined that consumption of the water poses no significant non-carcinogenic health risk.

Summary: Mining activities release toxic metals, including lead, into the environment, resulting in high lead concentrations in soil and human exposure. This study found that lead concentrations in soil and blood decrease with increasing distance from a cluster of tailings facilities in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Analysis and probabilistic health risk assessment of some trace elements contamination and sulphur dioxide residual in raisins

Maryam Saghafi et al.

Summary: This study analyzed trace elements and sulfur dioxide residues in raisin samples from different regions of Iran. The results showed higher levels of copper, zinc, and iron, while cadmium, nickel, arsenic, and lead were below detection limits. The sulfur dioxide residues ranged from 30 to 843.33 mg/kg. The findings suggest a need for continued monitoring and regulation of these substances in dried fruits to ensure consumer health and facilitate international trade.
