Individual variation, personality, and the ability of animals to cope with climate change

John F. Cockrem

Summary: The Sixth Assessment of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change highlights that climate change has larger negative effects on animals than previously believed. Animal species are increasingly facing more frequent and extreme weather conditions, which is different from the conditions under which they evolved. Behavioral and physiological responses vary among individuals in all species. Populations with high individual variation are more likely to cope with climate change and survive in different environmental conditions. The size of the glucocorticoid response in animals indicates their personality. Animals with reactive personalities, characterized by higher glucocorticoid responses, are more adaptable and able to cope with changing conditions, including those caused by climate change.

Moonlight triggers nocturnal display in a diurnal bird

Juan C. Alonso et al.

Summary: The study found that male African houbara bustards display more frequently under moonlight, possibly to detect predators and visually communicate with females. Moonlight also facilitates males combining booms with visual signals from white neck feathers, making multimodal signals more efficient.

Alert time reflects the negative impacts of human disturbance on an endangered bird species in Changbai Mountain, China

Wenyu Xu et al.

Summary: The study reveals that individuals experiencing higher levels of human disturbance have shorter flight initiation distances, indicating potential habituation of the local population to human approach. However, the species spends more time being vigilant in its behavioral budget, suggesting that other human-induced stimuli may have negative effects on the species.

Feather Corticosterone Measurements and Behavioral Observations in the Great White Pelican (Pelecanus onocrotalus) Living under Different Flight Restraint Conditions in German Zoos

Gudrun Haase et al.

Summary: The flight restriction of great white pelicans does not seem to have a significant impact on welfare indicators, adrenal activity, or behavior assessed in this study. However, reversibly deflighted pelicans showed higher levels of stress indicator CORTf compared to irreversibly deflighted and airworthy pelicans. Additionally, group size of the pelicans may influence their welfare, with larger groups having lower stress levels.
