Spectroscopic signatures and oxidation characteristics of nanosecond laser-induced cerium plasmas

Emily H. Kwapis et al.

Summary: This research aims to investigate the influence of atmospheric conditions and oxidation reactions on the spectroscopic characteristics of laser-induced plutonium surrogate plasmas. Time-resolved spectra of nanosecond laser ablation cerium plasmas were measured in various atmospheres containing different concentrations of oxygen. The results showed that in oxygen-rich environments, the presence of CeO decreased from around 60 & mu;s to 50 & mu;s, and significant growth of CeO molecular emission bands was observed. The formation and depletion of CeO in the laser-produced plasma were further studied using integrated intensities of the CeO D1-X1 transition and strong atomic Ce peaks.

Influence of silicon particle morphology on laser-induced plasma properties

Elliot R. Wainwright et al.

Summary: The characteristics of laser-induced plasma of Si particles and a bulk Si wafer of different sizes were investigated using high-energy nanosecond-pulsed laser excitation. The intensity and location of various species in the plasma were tracked over two time regimes, 2-10 µs and 20-80 µs, showing differences in impurities and peak intensities between different particle sizes and compared to the Si wafer. The acoustic response of the powders also exhibited differences depending on the plasma carbon content.

Shock physics and shadowgraphic measurements of laser-produced cerium plasmas

Emil H. Kwapis et al.

Summary: Shadowgraphic measurements combined with gas-dynamics theory are used to investigate the physics of shockwaves generated by nanosecond laser ablation of cerium metal targets. Time-resolved shadowgraphic imaging is employed to measure the propagation and attenuation of the laser-induced shockwave through air and argon atmospheres at different background pressures. The Rankine-Hugoniot relations are also used to estimate the properties of the shock-heated gas behind the shock front.

Determination of detonation characteristics by laser-induced plasma spectra and micro-explosion dynamics

Xianshuang Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a micro-scale approach based on radiation spectra and dynamic analysis during the interaction between laser and energetic materials (EMs) was proposed for high-precision diagnosis of explosion parameters. The results revealed a tight correlation between micro-detonation and macroscopic detonation, allowing for the estimation of macroscale detonation performance in a high-speed and high-accuracy manner. This method provides a small-dose, low-cost, and multi-parameter approach to diagnose the performance of EMs in the macroscale domain from the microscale domain.

The effect of oxygen concentration on the speciation of laser ablated uranium

Mark A. Burton et al.

Summary: In this study, the influence of oxygen on rapidly cooling uranium was investigated through laser ablation of uranium metal in different concentrations of oxygen gas. The analysis of recovered particulates revealed that the micrometer-sized particulates are mainly amorphous UOx and UO2, and they convert to alpha-U3O8 when heated. It was also found that cooling timescales can affect the structural composition of uranium oxides.

Summary: The simplified burn model (SBM) is developed to simulate the effects of explosive detonations. Based on a five-equation compressible multiphase flow model, SBM can accurately reproduce the velocity, state, and bulk structure of Chapman-Jouguet detonations, with blast profiles and pressure-time traces relatively independent of input parameters.

Summary: A study on direct enrichment assay of gaseous UF6 using LIBS revealed that vapor pressure of UF6 is a crucial parameter for analysis, with signal-to-background ratio influenced by gas pressure and laser energy. Optimization of experimental parameters is necessary to reduce the impact of self-absorption on accurate UF6 enrichment assay.
