High selective property of gelatin/MWCNTs functionalized carbon fiber microelectrode: Toward real-time monitoring of ascorbate

Zhaoxue Deng et al.

Summary: Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have shown great potential as powerful materials for in vivo electrochemistry sensing. However, their use as a bio-interface on electrode surfaces is limited due to toxicity, and protein adsorption presents a challenge to stability and sensitivity of implanted electrodes. In this study, we validated a protein pre-treated strategy as an effective way to improve the in vivo monitoring of neurochemical small molecules using gelatin-MWCNTs functionalized carbon fiber microelectrodes. The gelatin-MWCNTs/CFME showed excellent stability, selectivity, and sensitivity, making it a promising candidate for in vivo electrochemical sensing.

A tissue-like neurotransmitter sensor for the brain and gut

Jinxing Li et al.

Summary: Neurotransmitters play crucial roles in regulating neural circuit dynamics in the central and peripheral nervous systems, including the gastrointestinal tract. However, there is a lack of bioelectronic tools for real-time monitoring of neurotransmitter dynamics in vivo, especially in the enteric nervous system. In this study, the researchers developed a tissue-mimicking, stretchable neurochemical biological interface called NeuroString, which allows chronic in vivo real-time monitoring of monoamine levels in the brain and serotonin dynamics in the gut. This interface has the potential for studying the impact of neurotransmitters on gut microbes and brain-gut communication.

Large-Scale Synthesis of Functionalized Nanowires to Construct Nanoelectrodes for Intracellular Sensing

Wen-Tao Wu et al.

Summary: A strategy for one-pot and large-scale synthesis of functionalized core-shell nanowires has been proposed, allowing for the production of a massive number of core-shell NWs with excellent conductivity and adjustable size. The nanoelectrodes manufactured with these core-shell NWs exhibit excellent electrochemical performance, mechanical stability, and antifouling properties, which are demonstrated through in situ intracellular monitoring of biological molecules.
