Gut microbiota modulates COPD pathogenesis: role of anti-inflammatory Parabacteroides goldsteinii lipopolysaccharide

Hsin-Chih Lai et al.

Summary: The study found that gut microbiota composition significantly affects cigarette smoking-induced COPD development, and fecal microbiota transplantation can restore COPD pathogenesis. A beneficial bacterium Parabacteroides goldsteinii was isolated and shown to ameliorate COPD, with its derived active component having anti-inflammatory effects and ameliorating COPD through inhibition of lung inflammation and regulation of host metabolism.

Neoantigen-specific CD4+ T cells in human melanoma have diverse differentiation states and correlate with CD8+ T cell, macrophage, and B cell function

Joshua R. Veatch et al.

Summary: This study utilized single-cell RNA sequencing to investigate tumor-specific CD4(+) T cells infiltrating human melanoma and identified their phenotypes and functions. The expression of these tumor-specific CD4(+) T cells in the tumor microenvironment correlated with the transcriptional states of CD8(+) T cells and macrophages, maturation of B cells, and patient survival.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the benefits of fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) on type 2 diabetes, obesity, and diabetic kidney disease (DKD). The findings showed that FMT prevented weight gain, reduced albuminuria and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) levels, and potentially improved insulin resistance. Intestinal integrity was maintained.

Probiotics (Lactobacillus plantarum HNU082) Supplementation Relieves Ulcerative Colitis by Affecting Intestinal Barrier Functions, Immunity-Related Gene Expression, Gut Microbiota, and Metabolic Pathways in Mice

Yuqing Wu et al.

Summary: The probiotic Lactobacillus plantarum HNU082 (Lp082) effectively improves ulcerative colitis (UC) by protecting the intestinal mucosal barrier, attenuating the inflammatory response, and regulating microbial imbalance. Lp082 achieves this therapeutic effect by optimizing the biological, chemical, mechanical, and immune barriers. This study provides support for the development of probiotic-based microbial products as an alternative treatment strategy for UC.

Sodium alginate and alginic acid as pharmaceutical excipients for tablet formulation: Structure-function relationship

Noelia M. Sanchez-Ballester et al.

Summary: Alginic acid and its sodium salt are widely used pharmaceutical excipients in solid oral dosage forms, but their high variability requires a thorough understanding of the structure-property relationship to achieve high-quality and consistent drug products. Compaction studies have shown the relationship between the structure of alginates and their mechanical and dissolution performances, while different analytical methods help determine the major factors affecting the behavior of alginates in direct compression.Various strategies have been discussed to improve the properties of alginic acid as a direct compression excipient.

Bifidobacterium longum Ameliorates Dextran Sulfate Sodium-Induced Colitis by Producing Conjugated Linoleic Acid, Protecting Intestinal Mechanical Barrier, Restoring Unbalanced Gut Microbiota, and Regulating the Toll-Like Receptor-4/Nuclear Factor-κB Signaling Pathway

Yang Chen et al.

Summary: Bifidobacterium longum CCFM681 alleviated colitis by protecting the intestinal mechanical barrier, modulating gut microbiota, inhibiting the TLR4/NF-kappa B pathway, and increasing colonic CLA concentrations. The effectiveness of relieving colitis showed a significantly positive correlation with CLA concentrations.

Leaky Gut: Effect of Dietary Fiber and Fats on Microbiome and Intestinal Barrier

Haruki Usuda et al.

Summary: The intestinal tract acts as a barrier preventing harmful molecules from invading mucosal tissue, with intestinal permeability serving as an index for intestinal barrier integrity. Increased intestinal permeability is associated with various diseases, and chronic increase leads to 'leaky gut,' observed in patients and animal models. Nutrients play a key role in influencing intestinal permeability and the microbiome for a better understanding of leaky gut and its potential mechanisms.

Sodium Alginate Modulates Immunity, Intestinal Mucosal Barrier Function, and Gut Microbiota in Cyclophosphamide-Induced Immunosuppressed BALB/c Mice

Juan Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the protective effects of sodium alginate on gut microbiota, immunity, and intestinal mucosal barrier function in immunosuppressed mice. The results showed that SA alleviated spleen tissue damage, restored impaired immune functions, reversed intestinal mucosal injury, and modulated gut microbiota by increasing beneficial bacteria and decreasing pathogenic bacteria in the intestine. The study suggests that SA has the potential to enhance immunity and protect against intestinal mucosal injury.

The Impact of Gut Microbiota on Radiation-Induced Enteritis

Yongping Jian et al.

Summary: Gut microbiota dysbiosis plays a crucial role in the development of radiation enteritis, affecting intestinal epithelial barrier function and inflammatory responses. The correction of microbiome through probiotics, fecal microbiota transplantation, and antibiotics could be an effective strategy for the prevention and treatment of radiation-induced enteritis. The gut microbiota composition, particularly the decrease of beneficial bacteria like Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, and increase of harmful bacteria like Escherichia coli, is closely related to the severity of radiation enteritis.
