Spontaneous Polarization in an Ultrathin Improper-Ferroelectric/Dielectric Bilayer in a Capacitor Structure at Cryogenic Temperatures

Yu Yun et al.

Summary: Through experiments, we show that spontaneous polarization remains in a ferroelectric/dielectric bilayer thin film, even with a thick dielectric layer, suggesting no practical thickness limit. We also demonstrate that the spontaneous polarization persists even when the thickness of the ferroelectric layer approaches zero, hinting at the absence of a critical thickness. Additionally, interfacial effects limit multidomain formation and govern polarization switching mechanisms.

Dimensionality-Induced Change in Topological Order in Multiferroic Oxide Superlattices

Megan E. Holtz et al.

Summary: By constructing ferroelectric (LuFeO3)/(LuFe2O4) superlattices with varying index m, this study investigates the effect of confinement on topological defects and reveals a thickness-dependent transition from neutral to charged domain walls, as well as the emergence of fractional vortices. The research demonstrates how dimensional confinement stabilizes textures beyond those in bulk ferroelectric systems, leading to a decrease in symmetry and the formation of nonpolar states.
