Epigenetic regulation of abiotic stress memory: maintaining the good things while they last

Vicky Oberkofler et al.

Summary: Plants, as sessile organisms, have evolved sophisticated mechanisms to adapt to changing environmental conditions and stress. Stress memory in plants is believed to be epigenetically regulated, with high temperature stress serving as a model system to study somatic stress memory involving histone modifications and nucleosome occupancy. This review discusses recent findings and unresolved questions in the field.

H3K27me3 demethylases alter HSP22 and HSP17.6C expression in response to recurring heat in Arabidopsis

Nobutoshi Yamaguchi et al.

Summary: Acclimation to high temperature increases plants' tolerance of subsequent lethal high temperatures. The study reveals that JUMONJI H3K27me3 demethylases are essential for heat acclimation in Arabidopsis. This epigenetic memory mechanism involving histone demethylases could have significant implications for environmental adaptation of field plants.

Heteromeric HSFA2/HSFA3 complexes drive transcriptional memory after heat stress in Arabidopsis

Thomas Friedrich et al.

Summary: Moderate heat stress primes plants to acquire tolerance to subsequent, more severe heat stress. Here the authors show that the HSFA3 transcription factor forms a heteromeric complex with HSFA2 to sustain activated transcription of genes required for acquired thermotolerance by promoting H3K4 hyper-methylation.

Structures of heat shock factor trimers bound to DNA

Na Feng et al.

Summary: Heat shock factors 1 (HSF1) and 2 (HSF2) are key regulators in maintaining cellular proteostasis and mediating cell differentiation and development. This study presents co-crystal structures of human HSF1 and HSF2 trimers bound to DNA, revealing a triangular arrangement of the DNA-binding domains (DBDs) and potential factors contributing to differential specificity between HSF1 and HSF2.
