Realizing symmetry-protected topological phases in a spin-1/2 chain with next-nearest-neighbor hopping on superconducting qubits

Adrian T. K. Tan et al.

Summary: In this study, symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases of a spin-1/2 Hamiltonian with next-nearest-neighbor hopping were realized on a programmable superconducting quantum processor using adiabatic state preparation. By reducing the gate count to around 50 two-qubit gates using recompilation techniques, clear signatures of the two distinct SPT phases were observed, such as excitations localized to specific edges and finite string-order parameters. A parasitic phase associated with the two-qubit gate was identified as the dominant imperfection that limits the depth of the circuits, suggesting a research topic of interest for future hardware development.

Quantum advantage in learning from experiments

Hsin-Yuan Huang et al.

Summary: Quantum technology, particularly quantum machine learning, offers substantial advantages over conventional methods in terms of efficiency and effectiveness. By conducting experiments with quantum processors, we have demonstrated the exponential advantage of quantum machines in predicting physical properties, performing quantum principal component analysis, and learning about physical dynamics. The resources required for achieving this advantage are also relatively modest in some cases.

Accurately computing the electronic properties of a quantum ring

C. Neill et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates an experimental blueprint for an accurate condensed-matter simulator using 18 superconducting qubits. By reconstructing the single-particle band structure of a one-dimensional wire and highlighting the robust properties of a Fourier transform, the researchers achieved nearly complete mitigation of decoherence and readout errors. The study also synthesized magnetic flux and disordered local potentials, providing insights into the fidelity of the algorithm and paving the way for studying new quantum materials with superconducting qubits.

Exponential suppression of bit or phase errors with cyclic error correction

Zijun Chen et al.

Summary: This study achieved exponential suppression of bit-flip or phase-flip errors in a two-dimensional grid of superconducting qubits using one-dimensional repetition codes, reducing logical error per round by more than 100-fold. Additionally, a method for analyzing error correlations with high precision was introduced, aiding in quantum error correction efforts.

Realization of High-Fidelity CZ and ZZ-Free iSWAP Gates with a Tunable Coupler

Youngkyu Sung et al.

Summary: High-fidelity two-qubit gates are crucial for quantum computation and simulation, but current frameworks do not fully address three-body multilevel dynamics. A new systematic approach is presented to optimize control and achieve CZ and ZZ-free iSWAP gates with high fidelity. Experimental results show interaction fidelities close to T-1 limits.

Positive- and negative-frequency noise from an ensemble of two-level fluctuators

Xinyuan You et al.

Summary: The analysis of charge noise based on the Bloch-Redfield treatment reveals a violation of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem due to the neglect of frequency broadening. The use of the spectator-qubit method provides an analytical approximation consistent with the theorem, leading to distinct noise characteristics with temperature-dependent crossover frequencies.
