Signal selection for identification of multiphase flow patterns in offshore pipeline-riser system

Qiang Xu et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new method of sample preparation using data from only the liquid accumulation stage for the identification of early-stage severe slugging. A set of signal evaluation and selection criteria are also proposed for the identification of severe slugging, oscillating flow, and stable flow. Pressure signals at different locations of the pipeline-riser system are selected for oilfield applications, and good recognition results are achieved using optimal signal combinations and different classifiers.

Effect of Electrolyte pH on Oxygen Bubble Behavior in Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Qiang Xu et al.

Summary: It was found that the formation and growth of oxygen bubbles were closely related to the photocurrent at different pH values (1.0-13.0), with higher pH values promoting bubble nucleation at lower potentials. Increasing the pH from 1.0 to 13.0 resulted in a 35-fold increase in photocurrent during the bubble growth stage and a 15-fold decrease in the average period of bubble growth. Compared to pH=9.0, the gas production rates at pH=1.0 and pH=13.0 were improved by 13 times and 22 times at 0.71 V vs RHE, respectively, indicating that a strong alkaline environment is effective in removing oxygen bubbles from the surface of the photoelectrode.

How do bubbles affect light absorption in photoelectrodes for solar water splitting?

Abhinav Bhanawat et al.

Summary: This paper systematically investigates the effect of gas bubble formation on the performance of a horizontal photoelectrode during photoelectrochemical water splitting. The presence of hydrogen or oxygen gas bubbles increases back-scattering losses, resulting in a decrease in photocurrent density. The normal-hemispherical reflectance of the photoelectrode is found to be independent of the bubble diameter and size distribution, but significantly varies with the bubble contact angle and projected surface area coverage. The area-averaged absorptance in a bubble-covered photoelectrode reduces by up to 18% compared to a bare photoelectrode. Hydrophilic photoelectrodes or coatings can improve the performance of large photoelectrodes.

Pressure-Enhanced Photocurrent in One-Dimensional SbSI via Lone-Pair Electron Reconfiguration

Tianbiao Liu et al.

Summary: This research observed an enhancement in the photocurrent of SbSI by regulating the lone-pair electrons (LPEs) through pressure. The reconfiguration of LPEs under pressure disrupted the inversion symmetry in the crystal structure and resulted in an optimum bandgap. The increased polarization caused by the stereochemical expression of LPEs led to a significant enhancement in the photocurrent at 14 GPa. This study enriches the understanding of structure-property relationships and provides a unique approach to designing ferroelectric-photovoltaic materials.

Accelerating Electron-Transfer Dynamics by TiO2-Immobilized Reversible Single-Atom Copper for Enhanced Artificial Photosynthesis of Urea

Dong Li et al.

Summary: This study reports an effective strategy to enhance the performance of urea photosynthesis using TiO2-immobilized reversible single-atom copper. Reversible single-atom copper accelerates electron transfer and ensures sufficient photogenerated electrons for multi-electron-demanding co-photoactivation, resulting in high urea production rates. This strategy is of great significance for improving the photoelectron-extraction ability of photocatalysts.

Single bubble dynamics on a TiO2 photoelectrode surface during photoelectrochemical water splitting

Tengfei Nie et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the evolution of bubbles on the photoelectrode surface and their impact on mass transfer and resistance in photoelectrochemical water splitting. It is found that the resistance decreases significantly at the beginning of bubble growth, but remains almost constant in the later stages. Bubble diameter and contact angle are influenced by light intensity, while bubble nucleation frequency is affected by reaction rates. A force balance model predicts that surface tension and Marangoni force are the main forces preventing bubble departure from the electrode surface.

Investigation of laser-induced bubble dynamics in water at high hydrostatic pressures

Ding Li et al.

Summary: Hydrostatic pressure plays a critical role in laser-induced bubble dynamics in water. Higher ambient pressure leads to reduced bubble size and oscillation period, as well as nonlinear decrease in maximum bubble radius and collapse time. At high pressures, plasma can gain energy from bubble collapse, while the bubble loses energy.

Experimental investigation on bubble growth and detachment characteristics on vertical microelectrode surface under electrode-normal magnetic field in water electrolysis

Shuiqing Zhan et al.

Summary: The effects of current density and electrode-normal magnetic fields on the growth and detachment characteristics of a single bubble on vertical microelectrode surface have been investigated. The results reveal that bubble coalescence behavior occurs at low current densities and can be gradually inhibited with increasing current density; external magnetic fields promote the bubble detachment behavior within a relatively large current density range.

Dynamics of single hydrogen bubbles at Pt microelectrodes in microgravity

Aleksandr Bashkatov et al.

Summary: The dynamics of single hydrogen bubbles electrogenerated in acidic electrolytes at a Pt microelectrode under potentiostatic conditions in microgravity during parabolic flights were investigated. Three bubble evolution scenarios were identified, with a focus on the dominant scenario characterized by lateral detachment of grown bubbles. Comprehensive analysis was conducted on the evolution of bubble radius, electric current, bubble trajectories, and lifetime for different potentials and electrolyte concentrations, as well as bubble-bubble coalescence events. A detailed comparison of characteristic bubble phenomena at various levels of gravity was also explored, including hypergravity conditions permitted during parabolic flights.
