Efficient solventless dehydrogenation of formic acid by a CNC-based rhodium catalyst

Pablo Hermosilla et al.

Summary: In this study, the complex [(CNC)Rh-Mes(PMe2Ph)]PF6 (1) was found to be an effective catalyst for solventless formic acid (FA) dehydrogenation, producing only H2 and CO2 as decomposition products. The addition of a base as a co-catalyst, particularly HCOONa, significantly enhanced the catalyst efficiency. Water was also found to greatly increase the catalytic activity. Kinetic experiments and DFT calculations provided insights into the reaction mechanism, revealing the crucial steps and the nature of intermediate species involved.

Chemistry of Compounds Based on 1,2,3-Triazolylidene-Type Mesoionic Carbenes

Ramananda Maity et al.

Summary: This paper provides an overview of recent developments in the field of 1,2,3-triazolylidene-type Mesoionic carbenes (MICs). These compounds are popular due to their modular synthesis and strong donor properties, and have found applications with both transition metals and main group elements. The paper discusses various aspects of MIC-containing compounds, including their synthesis, spectroscopic properties, and potential applications in catalysis and small-molecule activation.

Impact of Green Cosolvents on the Catalytic Dehydrogenation of Formic Acid: The Case of Iridium Catalysts Bearing NHC-phosphane Ligands

Ana Luque-Gomez et al.

Summary: Two iridium catalysts demonstrated high activity in the solventless dehydrogenation of formic acid, with even better performance observed in green organic carbonates like DMC and PC. Experimental data and DFT calculations suggest that the formation of dinuclear species is the pathway for catalyst deactivation, which can be prevented in the presence of organic carbonates.
