The Dependence of Cold and Hot Patches on Local Plasma Transport and Particle Precipitation in Northern Hemisphere Winter

A statistical study of polar cap flow channels observed in both hemispheres using SuperDARN radars

Summary: This paper presents the first large-scale statistical study on ionospheric fast flow channels in the polar cap using the SuperDARN radar network. The study found that these flow channels are predominantly driven by IMF B-y dominant conditions and occur preferentially during disturbed IMF conditions. Additionally, large populations of flow channels were observed on the flanks of the polar cap region, suggesting significant momentum transfer from the magnetosphere in these areas.

Cusp Dynamics and Polar Cap Patch Formation Associated With a Small IMF Southward Turning

Solar and Geomagnetic Activity Impact on Occurrence and Spatial Size of Cold and Hot Polar Cap Patches

Summary: This study conducted a statistical survey on the relationship between solar and geomagnetic activity and polar cap patches. The results show that cold patches are closely dependent on solar and geomagnetic activity, while hot patches are not. Both cold and hot patches prefer to appear in the winter season, and their spatial size decreases (increases) with solar (geomagnetic) activity. Additionally, under similar solar and geomagnetic activity, cold patches appear to have larger spatial size than hot patches.
