Near-infrared-to-visible upconversion from 980 nm excitation band by binary solid of PbS quantum dot with directly attached emitter

Neeti Tripathi et al.

Summary: This study reports the long-wavelength near-infrared photon upconversion achieved by triplet-triplet annihilation in cast solid. By constructing a binary solid of PbS quantum dot (QD) and an anthradithiophene derivative that can directly attach to the QD, a NIR excitation at 975 nm led to a UC quantum yield of 0.2% (vs. 50% full-scale) and a threshold intensity of 2.5 W cm(-2). It was found that the triplet energy transfer from QD was accelerated by the direct attachment based on the UC emission dynamics.

In optimized rubrene-based nanoparticle blends for photon upconversion, singlet energy collection outcompetes triplet-pair separation, not singlet fission

David G. Bossanyi et al.

Summary: The conversion of near-infrared photons to visible light through triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion is an attractive strategy for boosting the efficiency of solar cell technology. However, the reverse process of singlet fission in solid state has been found to hinder efficient upconversion. Despite the increase in photoluminescence quantum yield of nanoparticle films from 3% to 61% with DBD doping, the energy transfer from Rubrene to DBP does not outcompete the formation of triplet-pairs through singlet fission.

Sweet Spot of Intermolecular Coupling in Crystalline Rubrene: Intermolecular Separation to Minimize Singlet Fission and Retain Triplet-Triplet Annihilation

P. Baronas et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of intermolecular distance on triplet separation and recombination in the crystalline films of rubrene and its t-butyl substituted derivative. Increasing intermolecular distance suppresses singlet dissociation into free triplets, while in tBRub films, geminate triplet annihilation dominates over dissociation, resulting in emission from the triplet-triplet state.

Efficient NIR-to-vis photon upconversion in binary rubrene films deposited by simplified thermal evaporation

Edvinas Radiunas et al.

Summary: This study introduces a simplified thermal evaporation technique to improve the efficiency of low-power NIR-to-vis upconversion (UC), and boost the UC quantum yield. The results show that altering the morphology of binary rubrene films significantly improves the UC efficiency, reaching a maximum of 50%.

Efficient solid-state photon upconversion enabled by triplet formation at an organic semiconductor interface

Seiichiro Izawa et al.

Summary: A novel upconversion system with heterojunctions of organic semiconductors has been reported. The system achieves photon conversion through charge separation and recombination, with an efficiency two orders of magnitude higher than traditional systems. This allows for efficient photon upconversion from near-infrared to visible light on flexible organic thin films under weak LED-induced excitation, visible to the naked eye.

Kinetics of photon upconversion by triplet-triplet annihilation: a comprehensive tutorial

Yoichi Murakami et al.

Summary: This perspective article provides a comprehensive tutorial on the kinetics related to photon upconversion (UC) by triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA) (TTA-UC), explaining the importance of understanding kinetic features for developing and evaluating materials for TTA-UC. It introduces the standard model of TTA-UC and discusses the concept of spin statistics for TTA and its relation to singlet branching ratio for UC efficiency. Additionally, useful functions for analyzing experimental data are presented to aid in understanding the topic.

Spatially confined photoexcitation with triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion

Zhijia Wang et al.

Summary: Two-photon absorption (TPA) is commonly used in confocal microscopy and 3D polymerization, but requires expensive and high-power femtosecond lasers. A new technique based on triplet-triplet-annihilation upconversion using continuous wave lasers has been developed as a promising alternative, demonstrating spatially confined excitation for photopolymerization.

Summary: The study demonstrates efficient photochemical upconversion using a Zr(iv) LMCT complex as a triplet photosensitizer and various acceptor/annihilators in THF solutions. The research shows high TTET and TTA processes with impressive record-setting UC efficiencies achieved under optimized conditions. This emphasizes the importance of developing molecular-based triplet photosensitizers based on earth-abundant metals.

NIR-to-vis photon upconversion in rubrenes with increasing structural complexity

Edvinas Radiunas et al.

Summary: This study successfully enhanced the emission quantum yield of rubrene by 40-fold through decorating special side moieties around the periphery and core, but found that sterically crowded rubrenes exhibit lower upconversion performance compared to conventional rubrene. The results indicate a trade-off between suppressed singlet fission and enhanced triplet-triplet annihilation in rubrene emitters, which can be addressed by careful selection of side moiety linking positions.
