Comparative life cycle greenhouse gas emissions assessment of battery energy storage technologies for grid applications

Xiaoqu Han et al.

Summary: With the increasing integration of renewable energy sources into the power grid, the need for large-scale energy storage systems (ESSs) has become crucial. This study developed a cradle-to-grave life cycle analysis model to evaluate the environmental sustainability of prominent electrochemical energy storage technologies, including lithium iron phosphate batteries (LIPBs), nickel cobalt manganese oxide batteries (NCMBs), and vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs). The greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of these ESSs were analyzed under different scenarios and their potential reduction in emissions was predicted. The results provide insights for optimizing environment, policy, and business models for large-scale energy storage in low-carbon power systems.

Spatiotemporal analysis of the future carbon footprint of solar electricity in the United States by a dynamic life cycle assessment

Jiaqi Lu et al.

Summary: Solar photovoltaics (PVs) installation is predicted to increase 20-fold by 2050. However, the production process of PV panels generates significant greenhouse gas emissions, which vary depending on the grid emissions. A dynamic life cycle assessment (LCA) model was developed to evaluate the carbon footprint of PV panels manufactured and installed in the United States. The estimated state-level carbon footprint of solar electricity in 2050 is significantly lower than the comparison benchmark, indicating the potential for a carbon-neutral energy system.

Life cycle assessment of natural graphite production for lithium-ion battery anodes based on industrial primary data

Philipp Engels et al.

Summary: This paper addresses the issue of greenhouse gas emissions in the production of battery materials, specifically graphite for lithium-ion batteries. It highlights the lack of transparency and scarcity of primary data on this topic and the importance of such data for evaluating the environmental impact of batteries for electric vehicles and developing decarbonization strategies. By providing transparent primary data from a Chinese graphite producer and conducting a life cycle assessment, the paper reveals the significant global warming potential of natural graphite anode material production and the disparity with reported data in existing databases.

A comparative life cycle assessment of lithium-ion and lead-acid batteries for grid energy storage

Ryutaka Yudhistira et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the environmental impacts of lithium-ion batteries and lead-acid batteries for stationary grid storage applications using life cycle assessment. The results show that lithium-ion batteries have fewer environmental impacts in various categories compared to lead-acid batteries. The study also suggests that increasing the contribution of renewable energy can reduce the environmental impact during the use phase.

Life cycle assessment (LCA) of a battery home storage system based on primary data

Friedrich B. Jasper et al.

Summary: While the market for battery home storage systems is growing rapidly, there are still limited life cycle assessment studies available for quantifying their environmental benefits and impacts. This paper presents a comprehensive life cycle assessment of a Lithium iron phosphate battery home storage system, considering the impact of peripheral components. Alternative battery chemistries are also investigated, allowing for a comprehensive comparison. The study finds that peripheral components play an important role in the manufacturing impacts of the system.

Environmental impact of the second life of an automotive battery: Reuse and repurpose based on ageing tests

Maeva Philippot et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the second life of a NMC-LTO battery through a multidisciplinary approach and demonstrates that these batteries are suitable for reuse or repurposing. The life cycle assessment shows that the second life of the battery is beneficial for climate change under certain conditions. Reuse reduces the impact on climate change, especially in countries with a lower electricity mix. Repurposing the battery also reduces the impact on climate change and acidification.

Noisy monsters or beacons of transition: The framing and social (un) acceptance of Dutch community renewable energy initiatives

Arnoud Lagendijk et al.

Summary: Through analyzing the framing of Dutch ECIs, it is found that they are generally positively framed in the press, emphasizing economic, environmental, and community benefits, with more attention in urban centers. It is suggested that the energy transition could benefit from a stronger emphasis on ECIs' role in promoting the transition.

Magnus Schulz-Moenninghoff et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel LCA framework for evaluating LIB repurposing in electric vehicles, revealing that in multi-use scenarios, climate change benefits are 10-22% lower from the perspective of energy consumers compared to single applications. Additionally, repurposing is identified as the most beneficial circular business model option for LIB from the perspective of automotive manufacturers.

Environmental impacts of solar photovoltaic systems: A critical review of recent progress and future outlook

Muhammad Tawalbeh et al.

Summary: Photovoltaic systems are considered clean and sustainable energy sources, but their manufacturing and disposal processes may have negative environmental impacts. By optimizing design, developing new materials, reducing hazardous material use, recycling, and careful site selection, these impacts can be mitigated. Emissions from PV systems are significantly lower than those from fossil fuel energy resources, and further reduction can be achieved through novel manufacturing materials and recycling efforts.

Feasibility of utilising second life EV batteries: Applications, lifespan, economics, environmental impact, assessment, and challenges

Mohammed Hussein Saleh Mohammed Haram et al.

Summary: By 2030, it is estimated that there will be 85 million Electric Vehicles (EVs) globally, raising concerns on battery disposal. Repurposing EV batteries into Second Life Batteries (SLB) presents an opportunity for both environmental impact reduction and revenue generation, but challenges such as standardization of assessment and lack of reliable information exist. Further studies are recommended to assess the feasibility and economics of using SLB.
