3D visualization of tectonic coal microstructure and quantitative characterization on topological connectivity of pore-fracture networks by Micro-CT

Kaizhong Zhang et al.

Summary: Research on the connectivity characteristics and topological relationships of pore-fracture networks in coal is crucial for understanding the microstructure evolution. Micro-CT technology was used to characterize the microstructure of original, tectonic, and reconstructed coals, revealing the impact of tectonism and external stress loading on coal microstructure evolution. Tectonic coal exhibited significantly increased pore space connectivity compared to original coal, while reconstructed coal showed a decrease in connectivity after stress loading.

Jiale Zhao et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the permeability of deep shales in the Yichang area, Middle Yangtze using three methods and found significant differences in horizontal and vertical permeability. Microfractures and laminae were identified as the dominant gas transport channels, and increasing water saturation led to a decrease in matrix permeability.

Changes of pore structures and permeability of the Chang 73 medium-to-low maturity shale during in-situ heating treatment

Zijian Wei et al.

Summary: The study investigates the permeability changes and their relationship with the microstructure in shale cores from the Chang 73 sub-member shale oil reservoir under different temperatures and stresses. The experimental results demonstrate that the porosity and permeability can be significantly increased when the temperature exceeds 400 degrees C. Furthermore, the coverage and connectivity of the fracture network are greatly improved. Kerogen pyrolysis is identified as the primary mechanism leading to remarkable improvements in microstructure and physical properties.

Pore accessibility by wettable fluids in overmature marine shales of China: Investigations from contrast-matching small-angle neutron scattering (CM-SANS)

Mengdi Sun et al.

Summary: The characterization of pore accessibility in shale oil and gas reservoirs is essential but challenging. This study used contrast-matching small-angle neutron scattering (CM-SANS) and other experiments to investigate nanoscale pore accessibility characteristics and their controlling factors in overmature marine shale samples. A novel accessibility index was developed and used to analyze the accessibility of different wetting phases in nanoscale pore networks. The results showed that toluene filled higher pore volumes (>7 nm) due to the development of organic pores and their connection with inorganic pore systems, while water-accessible pores were observed within a pore size of less than 7 nm. The accessibility to water and toluene was controlled by pore surface wettability and pore connectivity. CM-SANS is an effective means of evaluating nanoscale pore accessibility in shale.

Time-resolved grain-scale 3D imaging of hydrofracturing in halite layers induced by gypsum dehydration and pore fluid pressure buildup

S. Marti et al.

Summary: This study investigated the role of gypsum dehydration in the deformation of evaporitic rocks and found that the fluid released by dehydrating gypsum accumulates at the gypsum-halite interface. The experiment results indicate that impermeable halite layers in evaporites are unlikely to trap overpressured fluid and dehydration reactions alone may not explain intermediate depth seismicity in subduction zones. The data demonstrate the significant potential of in-situ 4D imaging for investigating fundamental tectonic processes at the grain scale.

Experimental investigation on hydration mechanism of Sichuan shale (China)

Jingping Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanisms of shale hydration and found that the high content of illite and absence of smectite in shale formations led to a rapid hydration process due to hydrogen bonding forces. In contrast to mudstone, shale showed a faster hydration rate, making conventional inhibitors ineffective in preventing shale rock hydration.

Gas Flow Models of Shale: A Review

Farzam Javadpour et al.

Summary: Conventional flow models based on Darcy's flow physics are inadequate in accurately modeling shale gas production data, leading to the proposal of various gas-flow models specifically for shale reservoirs. The microscopic pores in shale, known as nanopores, primarily associated with organic matter, contribute to a dual pore system that increases the complexity of gas flow. In addition to viscous flow, shale's permeability results in gas slippage and Knudsen diffusion, adding more flow processes beyond Darcy's law.

Characterization of Closed Pores in Longmaxi Shale by Synchrotron Small-Angle X-ray Scattering

Linhao Zhang et al.

Summary: The study systematically characterized the closed pores of Longmaxi Formation shale in Sichuan Basin by combining small-angle X-ray scattering with two fluid intrusion methods. Factors such as TOC content and mineral composition were found to affect the development of closed pores in the shale, while a relationship between shale matrix permeability and the fraction of closed pores was indirectly observed. Additionally, the fractal dimension of the system was deduced to be influenced by the closed pores, indicating potential for increased oil and gas production and recovery rates through further opening of the closed system during shale gas development.
