Transforming US urban green infrastructure planning to address equity

Zbigniew J. Grabowski et al.

Summary: Cities across the Unites States have embraced green infrastructure in official planning efforts, but it remains unclear whether these plans address systemic racism and urban inequality. A study of 122 formal plans from 20 US cities found a widespread failure to incorporate equity and justice principles into these plans. The majority of plans do not utilize inclusive processes and fail to identify the causes of uneven distributions and vulnerability. To improve current GI planning practices, clear definitions of equity and justice are needed, planning must engage with causes of inequality and displacement, and a focus on inclusion is necessary.

Governing for Transformative Change across the Biodiversity-Climate-Society Nexus

Unai Pascual et al.

Summary: The article discusses the importance of transformative governance in addressing the global environmental crisis. It draws on a joint report between the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services to identify principles for transformative governance. The case studies include forest ecosystems, marine ecosystems, urban environments, and the Arctic. The article argues that transformative governance principles are essential for effectively addressing climate change, biodiversity decline, and promoting human well-being.

Envisioning carbon-smart and just urban green infrastructure

Jussi Lampinen et al.

Summary: The study investigates the perceptions of urban residents regarding multifunctional urban green infrastructure (UGI) and its contribution to carbon neutrality, biodiversity, human well-being, and justice outcomes. The findings reveal how different meanings related to carbon are associated with UGI and how these meanings relate to broader sustainability outcomes. The study contributes to a holistic understanding of how UGI can tackle climate change, human well-being, and biodiversity loss in cities.

Public participation GIS can help assess multiple dimensions of environmental justice in urban green and blue space planning

Silviya Korpilo et al.

Summary: In the last two decades, public participation GIS (PPGIS) has been widely used in urban green and blue space (UGBS) planning. However, integrating environmental justice in PPGIS research is still in the early stages and requires further development. This study presents a new method for assessing perceived recognition and procedural justice in UGBS planning in Amager island, Copenhagen. Through surveys and data analysis, the study classified respondents into four clusters representing different levels of perceived recognition and procedural justice. The results showed variations in spatial distribution and preferences among different clusters, and gender had a significant impact on the perceptions of recognition and procedure. Planning inclusive and environmentally just UGBS requires a flexible and intersectional understanding of space, taking into account the everyday needs of different and marginalized groups.

Time to integrate global climate change and biodiversity science-policy agendas

Nathalie Pettorelli et al.

Summary: There is a growing recognition of the fundamental connection between climate change and biodiversity crises, calling for a more integrated global approach. Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are seen as a promising pathway to promote synergies between the two agendas, but uncertainties and limited evidence remain regarding their benefits for biodiversity. Policy implications include addressing underfunding, removing negative financial incentives, developing higher integration levels between biodiversity and climate change agendas, agreeing on a monitoring framework, and rethinking environmental legislation to better support biodiversity conservation.
